Mitchell Shire Council calling for action at state level

Council will be taking several motions to the first State Council meeting of the Municipal Association of Victoria for 2024.

In all there will be six motions presented to the meeting including a call to increase funding to build back following disasters, making sure communities are heard in emergency management and for government to ensure the timely delivery of new schools.

Cr Bill Chisholm said that actions need to be strengthened in the wake of disasters.

“Telecommunications problems need to be addressed along with the need to do something about the ageing CFA fleet of fire trucks many of which are over 30 years old,” Cr Chisholm said.

Other motions include a call on the Allen government to increase funding available to councils to enable road maintenance and upgrades along with funding to support councils to manage the cost impact of cultural heritage management plans and increased support for the management of heritage structures.

Torching concern over lit cars in Clonbinane

Members of the Clonbinane community are concerned over the number of cars that have been set alight in the area.

Of real concern is that in the latest incident a vehicle was torched in dry grass on the corner of Spur and Leviathan Roads on a day of total fire ban.

The car in question was stolen from Craigieburn in the early hours of February 20. Ten minutes later it was used in a petrol theft at the Craigieburn BP service station.

It is not known if the car was involved in other incidents between the theft and when it was set alight.

A dry thunderstorm was occurring at the time and residents believe that this may have muffled the sound of the car exploding into flames close to residential properties.

The owner of the car, Holly Kealy, was naturally distraught over the theft of her vehicle and the loss that extended well beyond the car.

“This was my car and it was stolen from my home and burnt with all my sons stuff,” Ms Kealy said.

Residents say that stolen cars being torched are a common occurrence these days and Clonbinane, along with other local areas, has been previously used on a number of occasions.

High Camp fatal crash

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash which occurred in High Camp last Friday.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 1.40am after reports a truck had left the road and crashed into a tree.

The truck was travelling along the Northern Hwy at High Camp when it veered off the road and struck a tree. The yet to be identified male driver of the truck was located deceased at the scene.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing,” police said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, with dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council Romsey Hotel pokies survey

The Romsey Hotel has applied for 50 gaming machines and Macedon Ranges Shire Council is seeking community comment on the matter.

Romsey residents, and those living within five kilometres of the Romsey Hotel,  are being asked to complete a survey relating to the application.

Responses will help inform Council’s submission to the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC). In response to an application to the VGCCC for the gaming machines, Council has commissioned an independent consultant to deliver a Social and Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA).

To inform this SEIA, Council is undertaking a community survey via independent company Insync, using a publicly available database from the Victorian Electoral Commission to target letterbox drops to all Romsey residents and those within five kilometres of the venue.

Council’s Director Community, Maria Weiss, said there may be people who have moved to the area more recently – or turned 18 and are newly eligible to vote – who are not captured in this database.

“We know this is an important matter for many Romsey residents and we want to ensure that we are giving eligible people within five kilometres of the venue the opportunity to participate in the survey,” she said.

“It is important to Council that our SEIA is as well-informed as it can be, to ensure that our submission to the VGCCC best represents the sentiments of our community.”

Eligible residents who haven’t received a letter directly must “opt in” to complete the survey, showing proof of residency to ensure validity of the data collected.

Residents can do this by contacting Council on 5422 0333, or by visiting a Council office in person.

Survey results will be included in a future Council report, expected to be listed for decision at the April 2024 Council Meeting.

FOOTBALL NETBALL PREVIEW: Back to business for Wallan Magpies

Wallan’s football side will come into the 2024 season with a largely unchanged lineup hoping to hit the ground running off the back of last year’s campaign.

The Magpies finished the 2023 season in second on the RDFNL ladder but fell short in the preliminary final for the second year in a row, going down in a tough match against Woodend-Hesket who eventually lost to premiers Diggers Rest.

Assistant coach Spencer Mathieson said the Pies would be looking to ‘take it one step at a time’ ahead of more ambitious late-season goals.

“We’ve just got to worry about who we play each week and try get results, and then hopefully getting to the finals and win a couple of matches there. That’d be everyone’s goal, but we’ve just got to take small steps at the moment,” he said.

A key addition to Wallan’s ranks for 2024 is Chris Stewart, a decorated ruck forward who is also stepping in as assistant coach and has brought an enhanced work ethic and training environment to the preseason program.

Former Wallan players Shaun Stewart and Lachlan Inness are also returning to the club this year alongside young guns Reuben Rode and Ned Davis.

The rest of the Pies’ lineup has remained largely unchanged, a factor that Mathieson said was an encouraging sign for the club.

“It’s always good to retain your people and to have a good enough culture that they enjoy and want to stay, so that’s a positive,” he said.

“We’ve just wanted to make it a place where people want to come to, that’s been our philosophy and it’s good to keep everyone around.”

Wallan’s season begins on April 6 as it hosts Romsey at Greenhill Reserve, with the reserves’ first bounce at 12.15pm and the seniors underway at 2.15.

Meanwhile, Wallan’s women are coming into 2024 on a high after winning the NFNL Division Three premiership.

The result meant the team has been promoted to division two, bringing a fresh challenge with longer quarters and a new pool of opponents.

Premiership captain Kelly Lennox said in an interview with the NFNL earlier this year that the team was in a strong position.

“We’ve had a lot of interest, a lot of new girls have come down to the club and are doing some pre-season training,” she said.

“The connection of all the girls in the team has grown too, we’re all pretty much friends outside of the club, the bond there is really good and really strong, and I think everyone is just enjoying it.”

The women’s season gets underway on April 14 at Lower Plenty.

Netball

Wallan’s A Grade netballers are ready to go off the back of a solid preseason with multiple fresh faces on board for 2024.

The club’s netball department is in a strong position, with new coaches Kirrily Gilchrist and Sharon Bell signed on for B Grade and under 19s respectively alongside the addition of a D Grade side that will contest the RDFNL’s newest division.

A Grade coach Lucas Bennett-Hullin said the Pies were looking good across the board.

“We’ve had a really good recruiting year across all age groups, so I think we’re looking really quite strong in all grades,” he said.

“We’ve made finals the past two years and unfortunately we’ve made first round exits two years in a row, so this year we’re hoping to go quite a bit deeper in the finals.”

While 2023 RDFNL Ryan Medalist and club stalwart Gemma Grimmond has departed, Wallan has retained captain Genevieve Carboon, sharpshooters Maeve Donegan and Rebekah Konstantopoulos, and defenders Georgia Stevenson and Amanda Rothwell-Hiscock in a largely unchanged lineup.

The Pies have, however, welcomed young gun Alyssa Pearse and Victorian Netball League star Madison Wallmeyer.

Bennett-Hullin said he was looking forward to the 2024 season with the round one home match against Romsey.

“We usually get Romsey first round and in the past couple of years it has been [at Romsey Park], so to host in the first round is a little bit different for us,” he said.

“We’re at that point where we’re almost there, we’ve done a bit of the hard yards and now we’re just excited to get on court and show what we can do.”

FOOTBALL NETBALL PREVIEW: Romsey Redbacks aiming high for 150th year

The Redbacks are gearing up for their 150th birthday with a revitalised midfield set to spur the side on from last year’s middle-of-the-pack finish.

Romsey sneaked a spot in last year’s finals series and defeated Riddell in the elimination final but suffered a three-point defeat to Woodend-Hesket in the semi, an encouraging result for the underdogs at the time.

Club president Wayne Milburn said the team was in a fairly comfortable position after preseason.

“We retained most of our players, which is always good, and we’ve picked up a couple of new ones just to strengthen up the side a bit,” he said.

“If training is anything to go by, our numbers are pretty strong across the board and we’re still running at least 98 per cent local kids, so we believe we’ve got a strong side and we’re aiming high.”

Inside midfielders Ash Millane and Aaron Flavel have joined the Redbacks’ ranks, while former Gisborne players Oscar Schnoor and Connor Bills have also made the jump and are expected to make an impact across the field.

Ethan Beer will make his Romsey return in 2024 alongside multiple re-signed players including Nathan Blair, Darcey Lockens and Nathan Rayment.

2023 RDFNL leading goalscorer and Redbacks star Jack Jedwab has also been retained, however duties will be split between Romsey and Essendon’s VFL side following a major signing earlier this year.

Milburn said the high numbers of new and retained players was a testament to the club’s strong culture.

“It’s really quite comfortable for the club to see how everyone’s all in as one, there are no individual groups, they all train together, they all socialise together, they’re mates on and off the field, and that’s probably achieved by having a lot of local kids,” he said.

“As a committee, we couldn’t be any more proud of our culture.”

Romsey will also be celebrating its 150th anniversary during the season, set to be headlined by another historic match against longtime rivals Lancefield.

Netball

After a strong first season as Romsey’s netball coach that culminated in a finals appearance, Lena Way is looking to continue building and go further into the 2024 season.

Romsey’s A Grade team made it to last year’s semi-finals before being knocked out by Macedon, a performance that met the target Way set at the start of the season.

“I was really pleased that we were able to play off in two finals and finish in fourth with a brand new coach and brand new side,” she said.

“We’ve added some strengths to the team and my aim is to play in the premiership. The talent we have returning to the club and also the new players are very exciting.”

Former Romsey premiership players Lauren Anglin and Danielle Davidson are making their return to the side, while well-known Victorian Netball League and Super Netball player Shimona Jok will be joining the team for 2024.

Among those staying for another year are Maggie Lind and Lucia Fauonuku, with Lind the Redbacks’ A Grade best and fairest last season.

Way said while the main target was a grand finals berth, it was important to strike a balance between results and player growth.

“Our key from now on is retention and player development, an exciting aspect is we have a lot of girls from the junior club coming up to under 19s and I’m really impressed with the developments of those girls throughout preseason so far,” she said.

“Knowing that they have a strong A and B side to aspire to, I think it’s really important to set the benchmark and the standard at those more elite levels. It gives them something to really look forward to.”

FOOTBALL NETBALL PREVIEW: Lancefield Tigers eye development pathways

Lancefield is showing promising signs with a spate of new recruits, a solid preseason, and high player numbers already in the books ahead of the season’s start.

After a somewhat difficult 2023 campaign that saw the Tigers finish with just four wins to their name, coach Tim Bannan has moved the side along to address some of the key issues that plagued last year’s efforts.

“There were a couple of extra games that we probably could’ve won last season, but it was what it was, and we’ve moved on,” he said.

“We’ve had a really solid preseason so far, there were a couple of injuries early but we’re building another three or four players into the club that have been a really good added bonus for us.”

Joining the Tigers this year is Corey Reid, a former junior at Lancefield returning from Greensborough who is expected to make his presence known in the squad’s defensive line.

Adam Miles and Isaac Smithwick have both made the jump from Broadford, with the former expected to play a defensive role but may also make an impact through the midfield.

Ben Radford will join his younger brother Jack at Lancefield after stints in Yarrawonga and in the Victorian Amateur Football Association but has missed a chunk of the preseason due to a knee injury sustained in last year’s grand final with Parkside.

Bannan expected the fresh faces would help  convert from appearances inside the forward 50, with finals the ultimate target for 2024.

“We shouldn’t be aiming for anything less to be honest, if we’re fair dinkum about it, sneaking a spot in the finals would be what the club is aiming for as a whole,” he said.

2023 premiers Diggers Rest requested to play Lancefield for the first round of the season, set to be a home match for the Tigers.

“There’s a reason why they got the premierships in the firsts and seconds … they’re going to be pretty hard to beat again,” he said.

“For us, we’ll see where we’re at. It’s going to take a few games for all the new guys to play a fair bit of footy together, but it’s a good challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

Lancefield will also be fielding an under 19s side for 2024 under coach Jason Tully, who alongside reserves coach Cal Randall has drawn the praise of Bannan as the club looks to bolster its football department.

The RDFNL women’s division will also feature a new team for 2024, as Lancefield introduces its first-ever women’s team in response to growing interest at the club.

Netball

Despite a last-minute reshuffle for the Tigers’ netball teams, hopes are still high for what could be a much-needed rebuilding season for the club.

Former Macedon coach Ciara Stewart has joined Lancefield for 2024 as A and B Grade coach, with ambitions to return the club to winning form after a difficult few years.

“Being as optimistic as I can, the goal this season would be to win at least four games,” Stewart said.

“I believe we can actually exceed that with a strong lineup … but four wins is still more than what they’ve had in many years, so we thought we’d start with something very achievable.”

Lancefield lost a significant portion of its netballers from 2023, however among those returning is all-rounder Ella Stoward alongside forwards Mia Daly and Darcee Ellard, while B Grade sharpshooter Tarnee Hammond has been promoted to the top team.

Among the new recruits are former Macedon players Shanae Brundell and Karlee Bruno, as well as Victorian Netball League star Shaid Sasalu and encouraging prospects Bella Collodetti and Eve Trainor.

Stewart said with the number of new players joining Lancefield this year, focus would be placed on building a strong foundation for future seasons.

“It’s a growth year, so we’ll work really hard to retain these girls because they’re all quite young, so the main goal as a club is to retain them for 2025 so we can field the strongest team possible from who we have available,” Stewart said.

“We’d be stoked to just even be competitive against some of those top sides, which I believe we will be if we have a full, strong side.”

FOOTBALL NETBALL PREVIEW: Seymour Lions ready to emerge from the Den

With a young side the Seymour Lions senior men are looking to develop the side and give them senior game experience.

Head coach Ben Davey said there was a huge opportunity to develop the players.

“There aren’t many boys in our squad in the 50 to 100 senior game bracket which is a huge opportunity for us,” he said.

“We’ll be looking to get more senior games into our younger players and support their development.”

The playing group has largely stayed the same as last season with some additions including Tom Maloney from Norwood, who adds his experience, including a VFL premiership, to the group.

“Tom is looking fantastic on the track and he’ll add plenty of class to our midfield following Jack O’Sullivan’s move to Wodonga,” Davey said.

“Dave Mundy is a huge pick up for us and we’re working on locking in his games in the coming weeks.”

Much like the playing group, the senior coaching staff remains the same as last season and Nick Dundon will again coach the Reserves.

Lachy Waite is looking forward to his first year as coach of the thirds who are ready to go.

Davey said Seymour’s preseason had been solid with a few changes this year.

“It’s been good to a do a bit of work with the Kelfit running crew to keep everyone’s fitness levels high and we’ve had a couple of practice matches,” he said.

“It’s going to be a very tough year. In the Goulburn Valley there’s no standing still with most other clubs having picked up some great recruits.

“We’ll have to be on top of our game to be pushing deep in September.”

The Seymour A Grade netball side has recruited some key players while retaining its strong side from last season, including Wellman Medallist Sarah Szczykulski and Casey Adamson.

Ruby Martin is back at the club after a year away and Ally Black has joined the side ,bringing her VNL experience with her.

Netball

Coach Ellie Fuhrmeister said preseason was going well.

“It’s always good to get back on the court after a bit of a break and blow out the cobwebs,” she said.

“The girls are looking fresh and ready to go after getting a practice match under their belts at Wangaratta.”

Fuhrmeister said the side looked primed to make a finals appearance again this season.

“I think we’ll still be around the mark at the pointy end of the season so we’re certainly not ruling anything out,” she said.

“We’re super keen to take on Tatura in round one who knocked us out of finals.

“We’ve got a fantastic relationship with them as a club and they are top class people and players.”

Both Seymour sides play Tatura in round one of the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley Football League kicking off on April 6.

FOOTBALL NETBALL PREVIEW: Laurimar Power prepares for NFNL division two

Laurimar’s senior men will move to Northern Football Netball League’s division two after last year’s grand final victory.

Head coach Jimmy Atkins said it was an exciting move.

“Everyone’s excited about a new challenge,” he said.

“Obviously we go up a division and there’s a lot of unknowns.

“We’re not really sure how it’s going to pan out, but we know that we’re just going to worry about ourselves and play our best footy.”

The club retained most players and all coaching staff.

“We haven’t recruited too many players. We’ve had a few new kids walk through the door and we’ve picked up a couple in the past couple of weeks,” Atkins said.

“But we’ve stayed pretty much the same and that was one of the big goals.

“We’ve got a young group, and the group got it done last year so we wanted to reward them this year.”

Laurimar will unveil its grand final flag in round two against Lower Plenty.

“Every week’s a special week for us. We get to play footy which we’re very lucky to do,” Atkins said.

“But round two we get to unveil the flag from last year so that’ll be a special day.”

The Power return to the Whittlesea Showgrounds, the site of their grand final victory, in round one against Whittlesea on April 6.

The Laurimar senior women’s side have had a change at the helm with new head coach Shane Munn.

Coming from a background in Thai boxing, this is his first coaching experience.

“My three little girls brought me across,” he said.

“I want them to play a lot of women’s sports and I applied to coach the under 10s. The senior women’s just popped up as an option.

“I thought to myself it might be a good opportunity to start at the top level and see how it operates.”

Laurimar have seven new players and Munn said preseason went well.

“We’ve got a lot of new faces this year, a lot of first-time players,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of positive feedback from the girls and the preseason just went really well.”

Munn said his focus for the season was developing a high-pressure team and ensuring respect on and off the field.

He also hoped for community support.

“I just hope we can get the support from everyone around us because at the moment I feel like not a lot of people know when we play and I’d like them to come down and see how fun and exciting the women’s is,” he said.

The Laurimar senior women face North Heidelberg in round one of the NFNL division three women’s league on April 14.
