Kilmore Racing Club’s barn works progress

Kilmore Racing Club has progressed with the latest stage of its barn build as crews completed the second component of the roof stage.

Four large cranes last Wednesday worked to lift the second barn’s constructed roof and attached pillars into place, an unorthodox process that streamlined the installation process.

The successful construction now means both barns have their roofs in place and attention can shift to flooring and beginning the installation of prefabricated walls and interior structures.

Kilmore Racing Club asset and infrastructure manager Shaun Loader said the day had progressed smoothly.

“[Kyneton Crane Hire] have done a great job having the four guys there, and the guys on the ground are very experienced in what they do,” he said.

“Safety is a very big issue in this industry so we’re making sure that’s the number one priority, but we’re very happy with how it’s progressed today.”

The project is currently on schedule and is expected to be completed by June, weather permitting.

The new barn will feature a trainer’s room, an indoor parade ring for the Kilmore Pony Club, and modernised tie-up stalls, all while using foundations that were left behind after the old tie-up stalls were demolished.

“We’re hoping that it’ll bring a lot more interest to the racing fraternity, maybe weekend horse racing or more night racing and a higher class of horse racing, as well more involvement from the community,” Mr Loader said.

“It’ll be good for trainers and the like; we expect it’s going to be a win-win all around for the community.”

The project has been supported by the State Government’s Victorian Racing Infrastructure Fund.

Epping Football Club among sporting grant recipients

The State Government is backing grassroots sports clubs to break down barriers to participation and help build social and active local communities.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence joined Member for Thomastown Bronwyn Halfpenny and members of Epping Football Netball Club on Thursday to announce 560 recipients are sharing more than $694,000 from the latest round of the Sporting Club Grants Program.

In this round, the program focus is on supporting, celebrating and building the capacity of sports volunteers in vital roles – from administration to coaching and umpiring.

Ms Spence said clubs, coaches, officials and volunteers were integral to community sport.

“It just wouldn’t happen without them,” she said.

“That’s why we’re backing more clubs with help to purchase uniforms and equipment and investing in their future through training and development.

“This is about helping to boost memberships, supporting volunteers and getting behind grassroots sport which is a vital part of local communities.”

Epping Football Netball Club received $1000 towards the purchase of women’s footy jumpers, while Craigieburn Basketball Association Inc received $2000 to upskill volunteer junior coaching staff.

Ms Halfpenny said Epping Football Netball Club was important to the community.

“Epping Football Club is a stable of our community and the uniform grant will help their women’s side grow and succeed – on and off the field,” she said.

Epping Football Netball Club president Adrian Onofretchook said the grant benefitted the developing women’s program.

“It’s been a long-time getting a women’s side together, but it’s finally going to happen,” he said.

“Now local women will have somewhere to socialise and keep fit doing it.”

The program provides up to $1000 for uniforms, equipment and resources improving accessibility and engagement; up to $2000 for projects to strengthen volunteering and officiating; up to $4000 to deliver a new sport or recreation program and up to $750 to support athlete travel.

The Sporting Club Grants Program has injected more than $16 million in support to thousands of community sport and recreation clubs across the state since 2015.

By providing more opportunities for clubs and organisations to build their capacity, this program goes a long way towards future proofing grassroots sport and recreation and ensuring clubs have the skills they need to take their game to the next level.

A new round of the Sporting Club Grants is also set to open in the coming weeks.

Seymour Blasters win Wodonga junior basketball tournament

The Seymour Blasters boys under 16s won the Big River Roofing Wodonga Basketball Junior Invitational Tournament.

The tournament was over the weekend from Friday, February 9 to Sunday, February 11 in stadiums across Albury and Wodonga.

The Blasters competed in pool A of the third division competition taking a 10-point win over Echuca Pirates in their first match on Saturday.

Seymour’s second game was a loss to Albury but the final game on Saturday against Wodonga saw the side take another win, putting them in the semi-final crossover against Bendigo – beating the Braves by five to play in the grand final against Myrtleford.

The Blasters took the win on Sunday over the Saints 45 to 25 with Cayden Bynon earning Most Valuable Player for the match with a game high 18-points.

Coach Justin Daniel said the team was coming off a poor tournament in Shepparton.

“Our play on Saturday was an improvement on that but with each game they were getting better as a team, culminating in the good finals performance on Sunday,” he said.

“The boys were not so confident going into the semi-final as Bendigo had three very good wins in their pool games.

“They were more confident going into the grand final as they had played and beaten Myrtleford last tournament.

“However, as we know anything can happen in a grand final so it was a relief and excitement when the game was over.

“Cayden Bynon got best player in the grand final but to win a tournament like that with five games in two days in warm weather, we needed a good performance from all 10 players and they all played well at times throughout the weekend.”

The team have played three tournaments together with their final tournament at the Junior Victorian Country Championships in Bendigo next month.

Daniel acknowledged the help he received off the court as well.

“I’d like to acknowledge the great work of Carrie Bynon as team manager and the results of all the Seymour Blasters teams across the weekend,” he said.

“There is a good culture at the club with teams watching and supporting each other.

“We hope to do Seymour proud in the upcoming Country Championships tournament.”

Cleeland visits Euroa primary school captains

Nationals Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has toured some of the Euroa region’s primary schools, meeting emerging young leaders in Avenel and Kilmore earlier this month.

Ms Cleeland visited both St Patrick’s Primary School in Kilmore and Avenel Primary School to discuss leadership and be part of a badge ceremony for the new leaders.

“It was fantastic to drop into St Patrick’s Kilmore and Avenel Primary School during the week to wish their new cohort of leaders the very best of luck,” Ms Cleeland said.

“Students at both schools gave me some fabulous advice about what being a leader means to them, which I will certainly be passing on to MPs during the next Parliament sitting.

“Some of the values shared with me included kindness, humility, responsibility, compassion, not being arrogant, and not being annoying.

“If everyone in leadership positions reflected these qualities, the world would be a better place.

“It’s fair to say these schools, and the wider Avenel and Kilmore communities, are in incredibly good hands with these new teams of student leaders.”

Grant boost for sporting clubs in the region

Five hundred and sixty grassroots sporting clubs are sharing more than $694,000 from the latest round of the Sporting Club Grants Program.

In this round, the program focused on supporting, celebrating and building the capacity of sports volunteers in vital roles – from administration to coaching and umpiring.

The program provides up to $1000 for uniforms, equipment and resources that improve accessibility and engagement; up to $2000 for projects to strengthen volunteering and officiating; up to $4000 to deliver a new sport or recreation program and up to $750 to support athlete travel.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said clubs, coaches, officials and volunteers were integral to community sport.

“This is about helping to boost memberships, supporting volunteers and getting behind grassroots sport, which is a vital part of local communities,” she said.

“That’s why we’re backing more clubs with help to purchase uniforms and equipment, and investing in their future through training and development.”

Broadford Cricket Club was one of two successful recipients in the Mitchell Shire – receiving $1000 going towards the purchase of junior uniforms for next year.

Club president Michael Mirabella said grants were a great help in the operations of community clubs.

“Receiving a grant like this helps any small community club,” he said.

“It just helps the kids and families to get into cricket, they need new uniforms every year as they grow.

“It assists with helping out the families with the cost of living and keeps kids involved in community sport.”

The Sporting Club Grants Program has contributed more than $16 million to support thousands of community sport and recreation clubs across Victoria since 2015.

A new round of the Sporting Club Grants Program is set to open in the coming weeks.

Nick Dundon returns to lead Seymour’s Reserves football

Nick Dundon retains his spot at The Den, coaching the Seymour Football Netball Club, SFNC, Reserves for the second time.

The Lions went through the home and away season undefeated before coming up short against Shepparton United at Deakin Reserve on grand final day.

The SFNC Reserves have featured at the pointy end of the season regularly in recent times, including a premiership in 2019.

Seymour Lions president Gerard O’Sullivan said Dundon took to the role incredibly well in 2023.

“Nick did a fantastic job last season with a young group of players, albeit one with plenty of senior footy experience,” he said.

“To have someone like Nick, who has high-level laying experience and is still relatively young, is a big boost for our boys.

“Nick will be pulling on the boots this season following a knee reconstruction so we’re looking forward to seeing him put in plenty of work on and off the field.

“He played a massive role in the success of our overall football program last season and we’re confident that last year’s coaching experience will hold him in good stead this season.”

Dundon said the entire playing list was looking to improve on last year’s results.

“Everyone around the club is hungry to have a big season after a bit of a disappointing end in September,” he said.

“We’ve got a really close group of players who are only going to get better the more they play together.

“Across the entire playing list, there’s a high percentage of boys with senior playing experience which really helps build depth into our Reserves.

“I’m looking forward to pulling the boots on again while supporting the development of our young players.”

Closer paediatric services on offer at Kilmore

A new paediatric service has launched at Kilmore District Hospital this month, following Northern Health’s commitment to providing better connected care for the community.

The new service provides support to young children who experience developmental and behavioural issues including speech delay, concerns of autism, concerns of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, ADHD, and significant levels of anxiety, particularly post-COVID.

Many of these children are eligible for National Disability Insurance Scheme, NDIS, funding, and the Kilmore team is focused on recognising and treating concerns before they start school and connecting them with the appropriate services early.

The clinic operates four days week, staffed by two community fellows and a paediatric consultant, supported by onsite nursing and administrative support.

The clinicians also provide outreach clinics to local maternal child health nursing and community health centres, where clinics accept referrals, not only general practitioners, but also maternal child health nurses and school nurses.

Dr David Tran said it was a new exciting service in a region where there is a huge need.

“By servicing the Mitchell Shire region and in particular Kilmore itself, we wanted to focus on some of the most vulnerable families and young children who, at the moment, are facing long wait times to be seen,” he said.

“Hopefully this will streamline services and enable some of these patients to get the care that they need faster, and closer to home.”

Dr Daniel Tsen said he was keen to positively impact in the community.

“It is fantastic that paediatric services are more accessible for community in Mitchell Shire region. This allows us to deliver better paediatric care by working closely with families locally,” he said.

“Through clinics at Kilmore District Hospital and community outreach centres, paediatric community fellows will also gain invaluable experiences in community medicine, consolidating their professional development as future paediatricians.”

Cooper was the first patient to access this new service on February 13.

Cooper’s mum, Jordy, is looking forward to watching him progress under the care of the paediatric team at Kilmore District Hospital.

“It’s really good that we now have local access to these health services, not only for ourselves, but also for our children, and not have to travel far away, or be on a massive waitlist,” Jordy said.

Families wishing to access this service are encouraged to speak to their local GP, maternal child health nurse or school nurse who can send referrals via HealthLink or faxed to 03 8405 8616.
