Preschools across the City of Whittlesea and Hume City Council can now engage in free sustainability incursions to educate and engage young children on the importance of caring for the environment.
Repurpose It, a Melbourne-based resource recovery business, is offering hands-on, 45-minute sessions tailored to early childhood centres, covering essential sustainability topics such as waste sorting, composting, and waste reduction.
Children will discover how to make great compost, learn fun ways to recycle food scraps, and find out how they can help take care of nature.
Experienced environmental educator Thom Fox, who will be hosting the sessions, highlighted the significance of teaching the next generation about the environment.
“Through these interactive incursions, we hope to inspire the next generation to understand their role in protecting the environment,” he said.
“By instilling these values early, children can become active contributors to a sustainable future.
“These incursions align with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF), specifically Outcome 2, which encourages children to connect with and contribute to their world by understanding the impact of their local environment and learning practical ways to contribute to a sustainable future.”
Highlights of the sessions include hands-on activities, optional tailored gardening incursions to revitalise centre garden beds, environmental education from Mr Fox, and the collaboration with early childhood teachers and educators to create learning experiences.
The sustainability incursion program complements Repurpose It’s Living with Purpose series, with Jamie Durie providing Australians with essential information and practical tips they need to feel confident about their role in the future of recycling.
The series aims to address knowledge gaps and dispel common misconceptions about sustainability, focusing on educating the public about recycling and repurposing materials.
Repurpose It’s sustainability incursions are available free of charge to early learning centres in the Hume City Council and City of Whittlesea regions.
