Structural works for City of Whittlesea’s new Community Hospital in Mernda are now complete.
The milestone was announced last Wednesday by Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas, who celebrated the achievement with a group walk-through.
Set to open in 2025, the single-storey hospital will boast accessible parking, clear signage and wayfinding, Indigenous plants, Aboriginal artworks, natural lighting, and warm colours. It will be operated by Northern Health, and provide City of Whittlesea residents access to a range of integrated services such as chemotherapy, chronic disease management, and women’s healthcare.
The hospital will seek to relieve the pressure of nearby hospitals such as the Northern Hospital in Epping, with Ms Thomas noting that its opening would allow for improved healthcare across the municipality.
“Community hospitals like what we’re building here in the City of Whittlesea will help take pressure off Victoria’s major public hospitals and emergency departments, supporting doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to improve treatment and waiting times,” she said.
Member for Thomastown Bronwyn Halfpenny supported the notion, stating that the hospital would be a ‘game-changer’.
“The City of Whittlesea Community Hospital will be a game-changer for local healthcare, ensuring that families can access vital services without travelling long distances. This project represents our commitment to building a healthier future for everyone in the north.”
