LOSSES to both Laurimar and Whittlesea were served up in the division three Northern Football Netball League women’s competition.

Laurimar played St Mary’s 2 on Friday night at Laurimar Reserve.

Despite losing, the Power put in a decent effort against the Burra, who are pushing for premiership favouritism.

St Mary’s got the jump by kicking three goals to one in the first term to lead by 18 points.

Laurimar fought hard in the second quarter, and was rewarded through a goal to Leah Bickerton, while also performing strongly in defence, holding the Burra to just two goals as the Power trailed by 27 points at the main break.

The third quarter was again a grind for St Mary’s as Laurimar continued to show improvement, holding the Burra to one goal for the term as the margin was 35 points at the final change.

St Mary’s again only managed one goal for the final quarter, but the win still belonged to the Burra, winning 7.8 (50) to 1.1 (7).

Hayley Dyer, Courtney Dark, Sarah Campbell, Savannah Brand, Tara Dyer and Lilly Bradshaw were all named in the best for Laurimar.

Such is the congestion on the ladder, Whittlesea’s loss to Macleod at De Winton Park in a game between first and second going in saw the Eagles drop to fourth, a game behind the top three but with superior percentage.

It was the first quarter which essentially decided the game, with Macleod getting off to a great start by kicking the only two goals to lead by 14 points at the first break.

Whittlesea did fight back in the second term, and had multiple opportunities, but could only manage one goal from four scoring shots through Shae Ashworth to trail by five points at the main break.

In a contested third quarter, only one behind was scored through Macleod, meaning the margin was six points at the final change.

Macleod had enough in reserve to kick the only goal of the final term to seal the game, winning 3.4 (22) to 1.5 (11).

Audrey Steinke, Ashley Fitzpatrick, Emma Hancy, Harper McPherson-Goulding, Kaila Vangeli and Ashworth were all named in the best for the Eagles.

There will now be a bye for women’s footy this week ahead of the final two rounds of the season, with Laurimar hosting Macleod on July 19 and Whittlesea travelling to Eltham.
