STATE Member for Euroa, Annabelle Cleeland, has wished local students Abella Beckman and Ollie Swain all the very best as they undertook the historic Kokoda Trek during the school holidays.
Abella and Ollie departed on June 27 after being awarded the John ‘Jack’ Dawson Kokoda Scholarship, which recognises young people who demonstrate leadership, community spirit and a commitment to learning about Australia’s military history.
Ms Cleeland said the scholarship provided a once in a lifetime opportunity for young people to walk in the footsteps of the brave Australian men and women who fought on the Kokoda Track during the Second World War.
“Abella and Ollie should be incredibly proud to have been selected for this prestigious scholarship,” she said.
“Undertaking the Kokoda Trek is a remarkable experience that challenges participants physically and emotionally, while deepening their understanding of the courage, sacrifice and resilience shown by those who served our nation.”
During the journey, students walk the full Kokoda Trail and visit significant battle sites, with a particular focus on locations connected to their own communities. Participants also visit the Bomana War Cemetery to pay their respects to fallen soldiers and gain further historical insight into the Northern Beaches campaign.
“Kokoda holds a special place in Australia’s history and I know Abella and Ollie will return home with a greater appreciation of the sacrifices made by previous generations,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Beyond the trek itself, these students will return as Kokoda Ambassadors, sharing their experiences and learnings with local schools, community groups, service clubs and RSLs across our region.
“I look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return home and thank them for their commitment to preserving and sharing this important chapter of our nation’s history.”
Ms Cleeland wished Abella and Ollie a safe journey and every success as they complete the trek.
This year’s scholarship was proudly supported by Kilmore Racing Club, Seymour Racing Club, Seymour RSL, Seymour Club, Costerfield Mining and Mr Brian Vial.
