THE Wandong Heathcote Junction Community Group has once again delivered a project that enhances the local landscape and honours community spirit. On 20 August, the group celebrated the completion of a rose arbour at the entrance to the Wandong Bushfire and War Memorial Park, providing a striking feature for visitors as they approach the memorial and rose garden.
The idea for the arbour was first suggested by long-time local Mr Vivian Kenney, who envisioned an entryway that would complement the existing garden and serve as a welcoming symbol for the park. The design was prepared by Carolyn Van der Ree and Daniel Kelly, and the construction and installation were expertly carried out by Darcy of One Off Engineering in Kilmore.
A highlight of the project was the generous support of Diana and Graham Sargeant from Silkies Rose Farm, who donated an additional 50 roses to expand the garden. This donation builds on their earlier contribution of hundreds of roses when the Bushfire Park was first established, ensuring the site remains a vibrant and beautiful place of reflection for the community.
While the project was ambitious and required significant funding, the Community Group’s ongoing fundraising efforts made it possible. In particular, the regular sausage sizzles run at Bunnings Craigieburn proved to be an invaluable source of financial support. These events, supported by community volunteers and local shoppers, demonstrate how small contributions can collectively deliver major outcomes.
The rose arbour not only adds aesthetic value but also stands as a testament to collaboration, generosity, and perseverance. It will provide a lasting legacy for those who visit the memorial park, offering a place of beauty and remembrance shaped by the efforts of many dedicated hands.
