A $2.6 million upgrade will deliver a safer and more comfortable place for drivers to stop at Barry’s Bay Rest Area southbound on the Hume Freeway at Wandong.
The project, funded by the federal and state governments, will include upgraded walkways, lighting and toilet facilities, clearer parking zones for heavy and light vehicles, road resurfacing and improved safety barriers.
Barry’s Bay is used by thousands of drivers, including heavy vehicles, every day. The upgrades will support safer journeys and help reduce driver fatigue.
Works are under way and expected to be completed by the end of July. The rest area will be closed during this time. Drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative rest stops.
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said these safety upgrades have received funding through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, which provides more than $200 million a year to support the delivery of safer and more productive roads across Australia.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ros Spence said these upgrades will provide the facilities drivers need to avoid fatigue on roads and ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely.
Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell said these upgrades will give drivers a safer, more reliable place to stop and recharge along one of the busiest freight routes.
Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said the upgrades will give locals commuting, heading away with family or driving for work a safer and more comfortable place to stop on the Hume Freeway.
