WHITTLESEA Secondary College (WSC) 2D/3D Year 8-10 classes recently completed a remarkable project, bringing them together with young learners from Sparkways Kindergarten.

Over the course of the project, WSC students were tasked with writing and illustrating their own children’s books, choosing themes that resonated personally with them.

This initiative, blending art, storytelling, and community engagement, has not only showcased the incredible talents of WSC students but also fostered a love of reading and connection with all ages.

The results were truly outstanding — each book bursting with carefully crafted stories and delightful illustrations.

Many of these creations went beyond traditional storytelling by incorporating interactive elements like pop-ups and movable parts, designed to captivate and engage young audiences.

Last week at the Yarra Plenty Regional Library, WSC students had the opportunity to meet with their kindergarten buddies.

The gathering gave the WSC students the opportunity to read to the younger children while witnessing them explore the interactive pages with wide-eyed wonder.

Later, the kindergarten students selected their own books to read.

This reciprocal sharing fostered a beautiful sense of connection, where literacy became a bridge between different generations of learners.

Teachers, parents, and community members have praised the project for its innovative approach to learning and its powerful impact on all involved.

The project not only enhanced the artistic and writing skills of the secondary students but also reinforced the importance of literacy as a joyful, shared experience.

This community engagement initiative is a shining example of how schools can cultivate creativity, empathy, and collaboration beyond the classroom walls.

The Whittlesea Secondary College 2D/3D class and Sparkways Kindergarten students have created memories and skills that will inspire a lifelong love of reading — truly a story worth celebrating.
