It took 10 minutes for a goal to start the game on Saturday, but it was the Magpies who made a bright start, kicking the opening two goals.

However, the Redbacks were keen to show out in their first home game of the season and kicked the final three goals of the first term to open a nine-point lead at the first change, 21-12.

Wallan made a flyer to start the second term, kicking the first three goals in just eight minutes to open up a 10-point lead.

In a see-sawing affair, the Redbacks would kick the next two, before the Magpies added a fourth goal of the quarter to pinch a two-point half time lead, 37-35.

The third quarter was largely goal-for-goal as both teams added three majors. However, it was Romsey who stole a march with back-to-back goals to steal a two-point lead at the final change, 54-52.

Wallan hit the front early in the last quarter and were never headed, adding to their margin and having every answer for the Redbacks’ challenges.

The 13.7 (85) to 8.8 (56) result sees both teams sitting on one win apiece at the conclusion of round three.

No goalkickers or best players were provided for either team at print deadline.

Meantime, Lancefield had the difficult task of travelling to a red-hot Kyneton outfit who had started the season in fine form on ANZAC Day.

In the battle of the Tigers, Kyneton made a fast start, kicking three goals to one in the opening term to open up a 14-point lead at the first break, 22-8.

Lancefield battled hard and were able to nullify Kyneton from running away with the game in the second term as both teams added two goals apiece. Kyneton still led by 18 points at the main break, 38-20.

Kyneton were dominant, but for a large part, were also inaccurate as the third term wound on, kicking three goals from 12 scoring shots.

Meantime, a plucky Lancefield were able to make their opportunities count, kicking two goals to remain within 32 points at the final change, 65-33.

Kyneton released the shackles in the last quarter and cleared away, kicking five goals to nil to eventually blow the margin out to 66 points, winning 13.23 (101) to 5.5 (35).

Tom Jackson kicked two goals for Lancefield, while Darren Robinson, Zachary O’Halloran, Riley O’Meara, Noah Smallacombe, Max Taylor and Ashley-James Graham were all named in their best players.

Seymour is on the board for 2025, keeping their finals hopes alive with a strong 48-point win over Euroa at Euroa Memorial Oval.

A stunning start from the Lions saw them kick six goals to no score in the opening term to effectively end the contest, leading 37-0 at the first change.

Perhaps more impressively, the Lions were able to hold Euroa goalless in the second term after adjustments were made, and as a result, held a 40-point lead going into the main break, leading 45-5.

It looked as though the Lions were on their way to a huge win when they kicked the opening seven goals of the third quarter as well to lead by 87 points with just a couple of minutes left in the third term, with Euroa still goalless at that stage.

A couple of late efforts meant the margin still stood at 75 points at the final change, 93-18.

For a large part of the final term, Euroa managed to put together some of their best football of the day, kicking six goals.

But it was Seymour’s day as they kicked two more goals to eventually win 16.11 (107) to 8.11 (59).

Jack Murphy, with his four goals, put in a best on ground performance, while Jesse Brock, Darcy Giles, Nathan Beattie and James Wooster also showed out in a result which sees the Lions move up to seventh.

Netball

Lancefield are two from two in the senior netball competition, coming from behind to take an eight-goal win at Kyneton on Friday.

Kyneton started the better, scoring 10 goals to seven in the opening term, and still held a one-goal lead at the main break, leading 16-15.

But it was all Lancefield in the second half, scoring nine goals to five in the third term to lead 24-21 at the final change, before scoring another 10 goals to five to break the game open for good.

Shanae Brundell starred for Lancefield, finishing with 26 goals.

Romsey came from behind to defeat Wallan in a free-flowing game, 40-38.

The Redbacks started well to lead 9-7 at the opening change, before Wallan made their move in the second and third terms, leading 18-17 at the main break, before extending their lead slightly in the third term to lead 30-28.

It looked as though the Magpies would finish full of running when they scored four of the first five goals in the final term.

But instead, the Redbacks hit back as they hit the front late in the piece, before holding on to win by two goals.

Charlize Bellette scored 26 goals for Romsey, while Maeve Donegan scored 25 for Wallan.
