THE City of Whittlesea (CoW) has welcomed the Findon Road election commitment with open arms last week, with a $270 million upgrade committed if Labor are elected.
The election promise committed to doubling the lanes, upgrading key intersections and cutting congestion.
Council has long advocated for the upgrade of Findon Road, with the project included as a top priority in its Advocacy Prospectus 2025–29.
Findon Road crosses the City of Whittlesea and provides an important link between the Hume Freeway and Plenty Road. It carries 23,000 vehicles each day and modelling suggests it will carry 35,000 vehicles a day by 2031.
This project will ensure Findon Road becomes a continuous east-west link with significantly increased capacity.
Upgrading the road will improve safety, reduce congestion and make it easier for people to access local services and facilities.
CoW Mayor Councillor Lawrie Cox is thrilled with the commitment, calling it a critical investment.
“This upgrade is critical to ensuring we keep pace with rapid local population growth. Investment now will increase capacity and connectivity, ease future congestion, and create long-term benefits for residents, visitors and businesses,” Mayor Cox said.
“We’ve heard our community’s concerns and advocated strongly for Findon Road to be upgraded for many years.”
“Findon Road plays a pivotal role in connecting our community to employment, education and essential services.”
Victorian Premier Ben Carroll said it was important to take on community feedback.
“We have listened to the community,” he said.
“Better local roads in growing areas are my priority.”
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Paul Hamer said it was an important update.
“We’re getting back to basics by improving the local roads working people rely on every day,” he said.
