RECENTLY, OKRFM’s The Matilda and Ruby Show hosted a Q&A with a special guest to learn more about Mitchell Shire Council’s (MSC) new kerbside bin collection program.
Every Wednesday afternoon, young locals Matilda and Ruby go on air to help other young listeners unwind after school. Their live broadcast is produced and co-hosted by OKRFM station member Mark Perrott.
Last month, the Review was invited to listen in on their segment Talking Bins, which saw MSC Manager of Environment and Sustainability Narelle Liepa attend as a guest.
In the cosy studio, the radio hosts spoke about how households can now sort their rubbish more efficiently, noting that research shows that 50 per cent of the contents in general rubbish bins can be repurposed.
For example, the food and organics bin (and complementary bin caddy) can now help locals sort their food and organic waste, with even noxious blackberries and pine cones able to go into this bin.
However, when using the green lidded bin or caddy, Ms Liepa stressed that plastic bin liners would not be able to house or collect the waste, as they are not organic.
“Only store bought bin liners with the AS4736 or AS5810 stamp are going to break down,” she said.
With the purple lidded bin designated for glass only and likely to be heavy, Ruby offered some cheeky advice to listeners.
“Taking the bin out is harder, so give this task to your brother,” she said.
“Be the one to bring it back when it’s empty.”
After July, if residents feel they require an additional bin, they can place an order with council.
The Matilda and Ruby Show is hosted every Wednesday from 4pm to 5pm. Tune in on OKRFM at 98.3FM in Kilmore, 97.1FM in Wallan, or live stream the show at www.okrfm.com.au.
