The Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes joined Victorian State Emergency Services (VICSES) Kilmore members last Thursday to announce the purchase of land for new headquarters and to thank volunteers for their ongoing contribution to the community.
The $6 million project has seen VICSES acquire land on Powlett Street, Kilmore, next to the unit’s current site located on Green Street, with concept designs currently underway for the land to be redeveloped and improved to meet the needs of the fast-growing population.
Ms Symes was thrilled to make the announcement.
“For more than 40 years, the Kilmore unit has supported the community, and this new facility will ensure the unit can continue its vital work for years to come. Our VICSES volunteers go above and beyond to protect the community, and its critical they have fit-for-purpose facilities to carry out their vital role effectively and safely,” she said.
The unit has 44 members, including five juniors who have been instrumental in responding to significant flooding events during 2020-2022.
VICSES Kilmore is the busiest unit in the Hume Emergency Management region, with their call out area including Kilmore, Pyalong, Lancefield, Darraweit Guim, Clonbinane, Wandong, Mount Disappointment, Broadford, and Wallan.
Kilmore SES Unit Controller John Koutras was thrilled with the State Government’s contribution.
“It’s community helping community, and we are proud of what we do. We are available to help in an emergency 24/7 and 365 days a year. We are very grateful for the Government support in building our community a new unit,” he said.
During the unit’s 40 years of voluntary service to the community, the unit has had many beneficiaries.
Founder and former Mayor of Kilmore Shire Council, the late Sam De Gabrielle, helped secure the land that the unit currently resides on from the water board and the then-local council of Kilmore.
And recently, the Bendigo Bank donated $50,000 which the unit used to install roller doors to their shed, improving response times.
The Rotary Club of Southern Mitchell also provides donations on a regular basis, and Kemps Bakery donates pies and pasties for training supper each week.
Volunteers are always welcome, especially those who have a flair for fundraising and grant writing.
To apply, call the unit on 0408 937 257.
VICSES have also set up a ‘GiveNow’ digital platform for each local unit to establish a direct online fundraising stream, and donations over $2 are tax deductable.
