Two local up-and-coming cricket players have secured their spot in Cricket Victoria’s emerging team selections.
Assumption College Kilmore students Lucas Cavigan and Logan Collins have recently been named in the lineups, with the former being selected for the Victorian Country Under 19s Male Emerging Players Squad, and the latter being selected for the Under 17s division.
Announced earlier this month, the squad will see a wave of talented young players train under Cricket Victoria in the lead up to the National Championships. The Under 19s team will be mentored by former first-class player and experienced Premier Coach Nick Speak, former Ryder Medallist and CV Talent Specialist James Miller, and former Victorian players Travis Dean and Jon Holland.
The Emerging Players Squad is one of six program opportunities in the second and final step in Cricket Victoria’s Player Pathway Model ‘Talent’, before players reach ‘Elite’, where Professional Cricket sits.
Though the pathway is not a linear representation of all players’ cricketing journeys, it acts as a roadmap where children as young as 5 can enter in at the Foundation stage, where Junior Club Cricket, Representative Cricket, the All-Star Program, and Premier/Country Academy sit.
Cricket Victoria Male Talent Development Manager Tom Evans said both Under 19 squads (Metro and Country) were looking forward to the opportunity to home in on their skills and develop professionally.
“I’m excited for the U19 emerging program to get underway,” he said.
“We look forward to developing these young athletes holistically over the coming season, and challenging them to continually improve as cricketers and people.
“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to help strengthen their development alongside our Victorian Premier Clubs and [have] the players learn from some of the quality coaches and staff [that] we are lucky to have working right across Victoria’s cricket system.”
