Wallan Panthers’ Division Two Men are making huge improvement in the Big V competition, but the side can now only shape the finals after a slow start to the competition.

Hosted at Wallan’s home ground in round 16 of the Big V competition, the Panthers wasted no time against Mornington at the weekend, already making a three-point shot within the first 15 seconds of the match, resulting with a strong five-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Following the stamina of the first quarter, the second quarter was the highlight of Wallan’s game, with William Strwart giving a two-point layup for the home side to hit the 50-point mark on the scoreboard.

Mornington’s team name might be called the Breakers, but the side surely could not break Wallan’s impressive game, only making nine baskets for the entire second quarter.

Wallan sitting comfortably on the board while the Breakers were 23 points behind, the third quarter was the window for opportunity for Mornington to somewhat make a difference.

Differences were made, but several missed shots put the score 73-46, with Wallan still outperforming the Breakers who contributed 10 points more compared to the second quarter.

Near the end of the game, Wallan almost produced a triple-digit game after displaying remarkable defence, and all-around good basketball, but the final score came to 95-60.

Coach Travis Heal said the side just kept building from the start of the season after a slow start.

“It’s been a slow build, I wish we had got there earlier, and the season sort of coming to an end, just as we’re getting started that we’re certainly the informed team of the league,” he said.

“The style of play that we play now is just a really nice style, but it’s a complete different style from the start of the year, where people are a little but more team oriented, and we make the extra pass and we find open man, we shoot a better percentage because we take better shots.”

The game with Mornington was the second game against the side for Wallan, with plenty of contributors, including Jayden OBrien and William Strwart, to make the redemption.

“The whole team played really well,” Heal said.

“I think the lowest minutes we shared in team was like, everyone got at least 13 to 14 minutes each, and the top guys only played 22-23 minutes, so everyone played, and everyone contributed.”

Wallan will host Maccabi on Saturday night in round 17 of the competition, while the Division Two Women will return from a bye, and go up against Blackburn on Sunday.
