Geocaching offers something for everyone. It’s an affordable, treasure-hunting outing, a real-world outdoor adventure, and it’s perfect for the school holidays. It’s happening all around the world and right now, there are more than 2,800 caches to be found in Melbourne. Over three million people enjoy the virtual treasure hunt worldwide.

The geocaching phenomenon started in early 2000 when a computer consultant hid a bucket in Oregon. He logged the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates onto the internet and challenged others to find it – and when they did, Geocaching was born.

It’s easy to get started. Create a free account via the App Store or Google Play, and then view the map to see the closest geocaches. If you get stuck, there are tips and tutorial videos to help.

Geocaching is also an excellent educational tool for adolescents. It involves critical thinking, hands on learning, and active engagement. ‘Geocachers’ – the name given to participants – become very familiar with north, south, east, and west directions.

A cache is a waterproof container with a logbook inside and sometimes even a surprise toy figurine or sticker.

The caches come in all different shapes and sizes, and are hidden in both rural and urban settings, including the Mitchell Shire. The smallest is a 35mm film pot.

Once found, record your find on the app and share it online. Remember to return the cache to the same spot.

Geocachers can read online reviews to check if the location has all-abilities access, is in walking distance, or requires a long-distance car trip.

Finding them is the ideal pastime for nature lovers too. It’s a great way to explore regional roads, mountains, rivers, and local parks. Remember, it’s a good old-fashioned outdoor treasure hunt, so wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.
