MORE than a century of service has earned the 1st Broadford Scout Group a well-deserved moment in the spotlight, with Mitchell Shire Council naming them community group of the year.

Founded in 1909, the 1st Broadford Scout Group is one of Victoria’s oldest continuously operating Scout groups and for more than 115 years, it has been quietly shaping young lives while lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed across Broadford and surrounding districts.

From campfires and badgework to community clean-ups and civic events, generations of local families have had a connection to the group.

Upon accepting the award, group leader Craig Waters said: “Receiving this award is not just recognition for the Scout group but acknowledgement of the countless unpaid hours the volunteer leaders put in each week and year.”

The Scouts have long been a familiar and reliable presence at community events. Each year, members roll up their sleeves for Clean Up Australia Day, removing trailer loads of rubbish and helping keep local parks, roadsides and waterways looking their best.

Their commitment to remembrance is equally as strong. The 1st Broadford Scout Group has taken part in every Anzac Day parade in the town’s history, assisting the Broadford RSL with flag bearing, donation collections, and the set-up and pack-down of commemorative events.

The group often supports regional fundraising efforts, including the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal alongside the Broadford Lions Club, as well as the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal.

Over the years, Scouts have worked with local Landcare groups to plant thousands of trees, helping protect and restore the natural environment for future generations.

Through decades of involvement in local events and initiatives, the 1st Broadford Scout Group has helped hundreds of young people develop confidence, leadership skills and a strong sense of community responsibility.

The award “also acknowledges the effort put in by our youth members who turn up to help on these community events with no expectations except that they are helping others and not expecting anything in return,” Mr Waters said.

Many former members have gone on to become valued contributors not just in Broadford, but across the region.
