THE Kilmore seniors have been good enough to defend their last quarter score restricting the Heidelberg West Hawks to no score in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Kilmore opened the day through Mitchell O’Dwyer in the opening two minutes of the game before the Hawks responded with the next three goals of the game.

The Blues then took over for the last 15 minutes of the first, kicking three goals to go up by eight points at the first break.

An old fashioned quarter time spray must’ve pushed the Hawks back into gear, leading to them kicking seven of the next eight goals in the second term to gain a 29-point lead at the major break.

What looked to be a thrashing in the build up, Kilmore came out to respond in the third, kicking seven unanswered goals including three by Jared Crosbie to take a 14 point lead 13 minutes into the final quarter.

The Blues defence then were put under the pump from Heidelberg West, as they kicked two quick goals in five minutes to bring the gap to only two points with plenty of footy to be played.

Multiple scoring opportunities were shut down, and the Blues back six stood up to defend their back 50 to take a huge win in the division 3 contest.

The young Kilmore list boost themselves into a clear seventh position, with an extra game in hand to be played which could tie them into fifth placed.

A positive result for the Blues led by Eammon McLaughlin-Matthews, Zack Ferguson, Chase Dennis, Chris Barton, Grant Paxton and Katlan Cook, who were all named in the best.

They look forward to next week where they take on 8th placed Old Eltham Collegians at JJ Clancy Reserve.
