THE Wandong Public Hall came alive on Australia Day 2026 as residents gathered for a community celebration marked by strong local pride and recognition of service.
Families and neighbours arrived early, filling the historic hall and surrounding gardens in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Australian flags, summer sunshine and lively conversation set the tone for a morning that blended celebration with reflection.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of community awards, recognising residents whose dedication has made a significant contribution to the local area. This year, the awards were presented to Carolyn and Jack van der Ree for their outstanding service to South Mitchell Neighbourhood Watch.

The pair have been active members of Neighbourhood Watch South Mitchell since 2018, playing a key role in promoting community safety and connection. Carolyn has held several leadership positions within the organisation, including Events Coordinator, Secretary and Media Coordinator, as well as contributing to the grants sub-committee.
In 2019, she was appointed Secretary of the Mitchell Shire Neighbourhood Watch Incorporated Group, a role she continues to hold. Her involvement expanded further in November 2023 when she was elected to the Neighbourhood Watch Victoria Board, where she draws on her professional experience as an accountant and small business owner.
Together, Carolyn and Jack were acknowledged for their practical, hands-on approach and their commitment to strengthening neighbourhood ties.
The celebration also provided an opportunity for residents to reconnect, with Community Group volunteers serving food and refreshments throughout the morning. Children made the most of the open spaces, while long-time locals gathered to share stories and catch up.
Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell attended the event and praised the strong community turnout, describing the celebration as a fitting reflection of the spirit of Australia Day. He also acknowledged the volunteers and organisers whose efforts ensured the event’s success.
As the morning concluded, the Australia Day gathering at the Wandong Public Hall was widely regarded as a reminder of the importance of community connection, volunteer service and shared pride in the town.
