MEMBER for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas recently announced that Macedon-based organisation, the Threatened Species Conservancy, has been named as a successful recipient in the third round of the $5 million Partnerships Against Pests grants program.

Receiving $48,875 for their project Strategy for Gorse and Willow Management on Private Land along Five Mile Creek, Ms Thomas said the program would help strengthen environmental partnerships across the community.

“This funding supports local community groups to carry out important work that protects our rural communities from invasive weeds and pests,” she said.

The project will seek to educate landowners on the environmental pests, by developing and distributing educational material to private landowners in the area, delivering a field day with best practice management demonstrations, and work with individual landowners to develop long term management plans.

In addition, the conservancy will seek to map gorse and willow infestations, produce both social and traditional media campaigns, run a stall at Woodend market, and develop an overarching strategic framework for managing gorse and willow on private properties in the area.

The Partnerships Against Pests grants program aims to support organisations that protect Victoria’s environment, agriculture industry, and cultural heritage from biosecurity threats.

During the most recent round, grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 were available to various agricultural and environmental not-for-profit organisations, including Landcare groups and networks.

Successful projects include initiatives such as the peri-urban and regional fox monitoring, the development of community pest management plans, and partnering with Traditional Owners for on country management whilst protecting cultural heritage. The grants are delivered in addition to the $250,000 allocated to competitive grants for Victoria’s four Community Pest Management Groups.
