Last month, Hidden Valley’s The Grove played host to a public hearing event that saw local and federal government come together to address topics of importance and concern across the region.
Forming part of a federal inquiry into the financial sustainability of the local government sector, the Standing Committee on Regional Development, Infrastructure, and Transport to Mitchell Shire heard from Mitchell Shire Council on a range of issues, but must notably the topic of available funds for much-needed resources.
Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell, a member of the standing committee, said the hearing provided an opportunity for council to openly address their concerns.
“It was a great opportunity to hear directly from [Mitchell Shire Council Chief Executive] Brett Luxford … about the particular local issues his organisation is facing in relation to the funding of infrastructure and community services,” he said.
“When you consider local governments are responsible for 600,000kms of the 800,000kms of road networks around the country, the investments made by the Federal Government are very important.
“While new funding is significant, there is always the opportunity to understand how things can be done better. Especially in areas that have experienced damage from climate events such as floods, as we have locally.”
The federal inquiry will also seek to investigate other issues faced by local government, including workforce challenges, financial sustainability, and cost shifting.
Mr Luxford thanked the Federal Government for their support and collaboration at the event.
“We thank the Australian Government for the opportunity for us to highlight the needs of our community and the role the Federal Government can play in supporting and partnering with councils to deliver community outcomes,” he said.
“The hearing at Hidden Valley was a great opportunity to speak directly to the Federal Government and put the case forward for improved funding models to support council in their role of supporting communities.
“Mitchell Shire Council requires continued support from the Federal Government in order to ensure our community receives the infrastructure and programs they need.”
Mr Mitchell shared Mr Luxford’s sentiments, stating that the collaboration of various levels of government was a highlight of his job.
“Committee work is a really rewarding area of my role. It is one where you see a constructive, bipartisan effort of working together to get results,” he said.
