THE first case of H5 bird flu has been confirmed in the Mitchell Shire, with a greater crested tern discovered in Kilmore.
The Mitchell Shire Council made the announcement at 1.20pm Wednesday afternoon.
They said there was a number of steps to take when seeing sick or dead wildlife.
“Reduce the spread: Do not feed wild birds by hand or bird feeders,” they said.
“Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands and utensils after handling animals, eggs or raw meat.
“Keep pets away from wildlife, including preventing cats from roaming and keeping dogs on leads in wildlife areas.
“When going to and from national parks, reserves or farms, clean your footwear, clothing and vehicle to help prevent spreading diseases between places.
“If you come across sick or dead wildlife, do not touch it with your bare hands.”
On Friday, the Macedon Ranges Shire Council also confirmed its first case of bird flu, with a greater crester tern detected in Kyneton.
A statement from Mayor Councillor Cassy Borthwick said Council are monitoring the situation.
“At this stage, there has been one confirmed case in the Macedon Ranges, Council officers are working closely with Agriculture Victoria and DEECA to stay informed and ensure our community has access to clear and timely information,” she said.
“If you come across a sick or dead bird, please don’t handle it, follow the official AVOID, RECORD, REPORT advice.
“The risk to human health remains low, reporting suspected cases helps authorities build a clearer picture and respond as needed.
“Council will continue sharing updates with our community as new information becomes available.”
