This month, the Mitchell Shire Council will be supporting the community’s annual NAIDOC Week parade and community celebration in Seymour, and are encouraging all to attend.
Held on Wednesday, July 10, the event will offer locals the opportunity to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with Council stating it is ‘an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.’
The event will begin at 10.30am with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at Goranwarrabul House, 6 Callen St, Seymour. There will then be a parade to Kings Park, with a stop at the war memorial on High Street to lay a wreath. From 11am until 2pm, tucker, stalls, and family friendly events will be held at Kings Park.
Mitchell Shire Acting Mayor Councillor Nathan Clark said the NAIDOC Week parade and community event has become a cherished tradition for the Seymour community.
“NAIDOC Week is a moment to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and look forward to a future where we all work together towards mutual respect,” he said.
“Mitchell Shire is proud to support and participate in such an important event that fosters community spirit and unity.”
This year’s NAIDOC Week parade and community event is proudly supported by Taungurung land and Waters Council, First Peoples Assembly of Victoria, Family Care, Rights Information and Advocacy Centre, and Mitchell Shire Council.
