Consistency was on Wallan’s side at the weekend, bagging a huge 125-point win over Melton Centrals.
After the loss against Riddell in round three, Wallan came back stronger in round four of the Riddell District Football Netball League, RDFNL.
A massive first quarter gave the Magpies the confidence to head into the second quarter, kicking five consecutive goals while Melton was struggling to get its hands on the ball.
At halftime, Wallan was sitting comfortably on the scoreboard with a 67-point lead.
From then on it was a breeze for the Magpies to claim their 160-35 victory.
Assistant coach Spencer Mathieson said Wallan played its four quarters after a few inconsistent games.
“We were after consistency, we’ve probably been inconsistent this year, we’ve lost a couple of games where we haven’t played to our full potential,” he said.
“We’ve been under par a couple of times, so we wanted a four quarter effort, so we’re happy with how we went on Saturday.
“Defensively the things we control, we’re a lot better than we have been in our two home losses this year where we’ve been under par with our consistency.”
Mathieson said Wallan had ‘plenty of contributors’ to rack up its huge win.
“Best players were Chris Stewart in the ruck, Sean Morris on ball, we had fourteen goal kickers so we’re happy with our forward line,” he said.
“[Others were] Michael Mannix, our captain down back, Owen Fowler down back, Riley Gilchrist midfield, but we had a lot of good players, plenty of contributors.”
Fourth on the ladder, Wallan will take on Macedon in round five at another home game.
Mathieson said the aim was to see Wallan produce more four quarter games.
“We’ve lost a couple of games, we haven’t won a home game this year, so we probably want to, we’ve played well away, but at home we haven’t played to our full potential, so hopefully we can do that this week.”
In other RDFNL results, Lancefield went down in a 52-point loss at its home game.
From the opening bounce, the scoreboard was quite low, with only a behind from Lancefield and a goal from Kyneton.
Kyneton changed the direction of the game in the final two quarters, ending the match with an 89-37 win.
Lancefield will have another home game against Melton Centrals, while Romsey – who had a bye at the weekend – will go up against Riddell.
