AFTER a three-year hiatus, Mitchell Shire’s Jai Cameron is returning to the comedy scene, merging where life has taken him now as a Marriage Celebrant with his love of arts.
Mr Cameron will make his Melbourne Fringe Festival debut with the world premiere of his first-ever cabaret, “Til Death (or Court) Do Us Part”, a wildly unhinged, emotionally feral and fabulously queer one-man (and a bit) cabaret-comedy-commitment-ceremony.”
“I decided to take a break to focus on my celebrant business, mainly, and raising my family. I have always loved writing and performing,” he said.
“This idea has been thought about for the last three years. I want to teach my children that at any age, you can do anything. So, to inspire them and myself, I wrote the show.”
What can the audience expect? Picture Disney meets MAFS in the genre-blending show about love, delusion and digital-age heartbreak.
Mr Cameron portrays Keith Maiden, a wedding celebrant, professional heart-holder, and part-time delusional romantic who, after two decades of officiating other people’s happily-ever-afters, is finally getting married himself… to an Egyptian prince he met online.
“This is indeed my first cabaret. They can expect some amazing songs, such as “I Touch Myself,” “White Wedding,” “Love Is in the Air,” and “The Love Boat.” The list goes on. This is also my first character show,” Mr Cameron said.
If all this wasn’t enough for Mr Cameron’s fans to figure out, the show is quite different to those he’s performed in the past, from his 2017 debut stand-up show, Would You Like Fries With That?, to his most recent, Domestic and Daddy.
“I’m excited to perform and have a laugh. The best thing about live performance is that each audience is different. When they are really into it, you’re on cloud nine, and I can’t wait to show this crazy show to the world,” he said.
Til Death (or Court) Do Us Part debuts at Bluestone Church Arts Space in Footscray on Wednesday, October 1 and is limited to five shows only.
The show runs for 55 minutes and is restricted to audiences aged 15 years and older.
