MEMBER for Yan Yean, Lauren Kathage visited the site of the Wallan East Primary School last month with promising results including its new name.

Muyan translates into Silver Wattle and the school will have capacity for 525 students from foundation to grade six, and it’s expected to ring the inaugural bell on day one of term one next year.

The grand new campus is at the rear of the growing Wallara Waters estate, and it’s positioned also on left of the busy south bound Hume Freeway.

This work is part of the Victorian Government’s $14 billion Best Start, Best Life reforms – the biggest transformation of early childhood education in the state’s history.

Since 2018, the State Government has planned to have 100 schools opened by 2026.

The premises will also feature two kindergarten rooms and offer up to 118 kindergarten places for local children.

“With new kinders being built across Wallan East, families will have more options closer to home,” Ms Kathage said.

“Having a kinder on the same site as school means one drop-off, one pick-up, making life easier for local families.

“Seeing big school kids out of the window helps kids feel at home when it’s time to start prep.”

Principal Neil O’Sullivan, previously from Kilmore Primary School, said it’s similar in size and he has already recruited to two teachers.

The library is shaping up to be a shared and welcoming learning space with sky lighting, air conditioning and acoustic panelling throughout that also serves as a display wall.

Landscaping highlights include ball courts, age-appropriate playground sections, an enormous shade sail structure and views of Mount Fraser to the South.

Already native plant species are thriving and receiving the best start to their future at Muyan.

The contractors are also excited about its progress, and they said a highlight of their projects is attending open days at completion.

Alongside the school, planning and development is underway for Mitchell Shire Council to deliver their new Integrated Family and Children’s Centre, offering at least 132 kindergarten places.
