THE Mitchell Majors baseball side put together another powerful and entertaining performance at the weekend, defeating the North Balwyn Stingers 9-0 at home in the A3-grade of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League.
The Majors’ offensive fire-power may not have been at its most prolific, but it was the defensive side of the game where they really excelled.
Giving themselves a three-run lead after the first innings, the home side were keen to keep the foot on the pedal after letting a win slip away last week against Heathmont.
Five extra runs were added to the score to take the lead to nine runs, and this is where it would remain when the game came to a close a short time later.
A wet outfield and chilly temperatures made for some true winter baseball conditions, but it didn’t phase club coach Lachlan Ruyter on the mound in his return to the lineup.
The team’s ace pitcher didn’t falter once all day and was ably assisted by the rest of the team who refused to make errors.
With the bat, Tom Flannery was superb once again, making it on base four times through three hits and a walk.
The win marks the Broadford-based side’s seventh for the year, but couldn’t improve their ladder position from sixth in what is an exceptionally tight season in the A3-grade.
The Majors will face eighth-placed Greensborough on Saturday where another positive result could mathematically rocket them to the top of the ladder.
The A4-grade side will also be back in action aiming to notch their second official win of the year after being gifted their first victory following a North Balwyn forfeit on Saturday.
