THE Wallan Panthers women’s team had a great win over the RMIT University Redbacks away from home.
It was all about the Panthers’ first quarter where they came out and dominated the contest early, scoring the first 13 points of the game.
Ranika Guyton and Kendra Reukers steadied themselves into the game, both scoring three-pointers early to take the lead for the Panthers.
The Redbacks steadied the ship in the second, matching the Panthers with 17 points to 18, leaving them 17 points behind at the major break.
A tight tussle in the third term kept the Panthers up by a reasonable margin coming into the final quarter, where they closed out the game to win by 14 points in a good win for their ladder position.
It was Guyton and Reukers taking control in the game, as well as Emmie Gardiner and Hayley Munro who also played well with over 10 points each.
They now sit third, a game clear of fourth, and two games below the top two, looking forward to a well-deserved bye ahead of the final three rounds.
On the men’s side, it was a horror weekend, with the team losing two from two.
Their first game was against Sherbrooke away from home, where they got dominated in the first half.
The Sherbrooke Suns doubled the Panthers score by half time, leaving them no match for the rest of the game.
They eventually went down by 32 points in a 98-66 loss.
Finally after four games away and 2142 kilometres travelled, the Panthers played at home a day later.
Looking for revenge against Mildura, it was a highly anticipated game for Wallan.
They were solid early, matching their opponents until half time where the fatigue from the travelling got to them, giving up 13 points the difference in the third and nearly another 20 points in the last.
They lost the game 75-109 and fall to the bottom of the ladder on the same amount of wins as Collingwood and Melton.
On the bright side, with four rounds to go they get to play those two sides at home, enjoy a bye, and finish the season at home against Warragul.
It’s all shaping up to be a fascinating last four rounds in the Big V second division.
