SEYMOUR crashed to a 40-point defeat in the second round of the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League competition at Shepparton on Saturday.
The Lions were jumped by a determined Bears outfit, and in particular, Luke Smith, who kicked the first three goals of the game to open up a 22-point lead early on at Deakin Reserve.
Riley Mason provided a much-needed goal to give the Lions some hope going into the second quarter as they trailed 22-6.
The Lions had ample opportunities in the second quarter as Mason kicked a couple of behinds, but it looked like they were in the game when Dylan Cook put through their second. But Shepparton mastered red time to kick three goals against the grain to lead 41-16 at the main break.
Seymour did everything it could to try get back into the game, but it just wasn’t enough. Ricky Schraven, Mason, Huw Jones and Jaron Murphy all kicked goals during the third term, and the Lions did win the quarter, but it seemed Shepparton still had enough in reserve as the Bears held on to a 63-42 lead at the last change.
Shepparton kicked away to add four goals to Murphy’s solitary effort in the last as Shepparton won 13.14 (92) to 7.10 (52).
Jones, Darcy Giles, Mason, Murphy and Nathan Fowler were all named in the best.
The Lions footballers went home with their tails between their leagues, with the reserves and under 18s also falling to defeat.
Seymour’s netballers had a mixed afternoon. The A-grade went down by six goals, 45-39, but B-grade recorded a strong 15-goal victory, 48-33, as did B-reserve, who won 32-20.
Seymour’s juniors were no match for Shepparton, with the 17-and-under losing 38-55 and 15-and-under losing 10-42.
