A GOULBURN Valley Water Authority crew dismantled a redundant water tower last week as extreme wind gusts had threatened its structural stability.
The tower housed a 37 kilolitre clear water storage system unit for Kilmore’s townships drinking water until it was replaced by a 16 megalitre clear water storage system at a higher elevation in Anderson Road Kilmore around 10 years ago.
The Kilmore SES unit were contacted last Friday evening and although they were enthusiastic about making the area safer, the work site would require an Occupational Health and Safety assessment due to high voltage overhead power lines.
Last Wednesday, a three man crew, a crane and a Goulburn Murray Water supervisor started work at 7.30 am to remove the tower and they finished the next day.
Kilmore SES Unit Duty Officer Matt Cullen said they were inundated with calls for help across the weather event.
“One of the jobs we went to near Sunday Creek took us an hour to get to because we needed to clear trees down on the way,” he said.
Between 5pm on Friday, August 29 to 1pm on Saturday August 30, they responded to 31 calls for assistance ranging from building damage, trees down and partial roof loses.
