LOCAL footballers played in the Junior Interleague Football Competition held at Rochester Park on Monday June 9, following selection to represent the AFL Goulburn Murray Junior Football League, (AFLGML) and their clubs.

The Mighty Blues Junior Operations Manager, Connor Noakes reported proudly that the AFLGML won all seven of their games, and Wandong Junior Football Club (WJFC) President Sean O’Connell praised the leagues choices.

“It’s always a bonus to play interleague,” he said.

“In years gone by we’ve had one or two players selected, and to have four is a bonus.”

U15’s Coach Craig Sutton selected Jackson Fraser from the WJFC and Xavian Jameson from the Seymour Junior Football Club to bolster the team, and they did by winning each clash.

In round one they stole a whopping 71-point lead against the Murray Football Netball League (MFNL), 11.6 (72) to 01.1 (1) and a narrow 6-point lead to jubilantly wave the flag against the Bendigo Junior Football League (BJFL), finishing on top 5.1 (31) to 5.8 (38).

U14s Coach Brenton Sheppard and David Davis selected Case Thomas and Ethan Butterworth from the Wandong Warriors, and also Levi Brown and Reid Inness from the Lion’s den. Easily they defeated the MFNL, also winning round one by 71 points and in the final game, their winning ways racked up a metallic 29-point win against the BJFL, 5.3 (23) to 7.10 (52).

The U13s age group also flew the flag for their league with a thrilling 23 point win in round one and in the final, they levelled up to a 27 point -winning margin against the BJFL, 2.3 (15) to 6.6 (42).

“They enjoyed it, and the best thing is getting into a side with kids of the same skill and calibre,” O’Connell. said.
