The sky was blue when residents at Caladenia had a visit from Farmer Darryls Petting Zoo last Thursday afternoon.
The petting zoo was a hit with the residents, and their families were invited to engage with the smaller than usual farm animals.
Farmer Darryl loaded the trailer and drove from Kyneton to set up a mobile farm for the residents. And, after setting up the water buckets and hay stations, he released the miniature goats who immediately made themselves at home—nibbling the roses and any green shoots they could find.
The nursing home was built in the early 1990s in a sunny location with convenient access to Kilmore Hospital. Residents enjoy communal time together in the shared lounge or outdoors, and there are 28 rooms where they can retreat to their own activities.
Activities and lifestyle co-ordinator Prue Shannon said animals bring out the best in people.
“We’ve had the wild action zoo come over from Macedon last year,” she said.
“I have always said, animal therapy is the best thing for the residents. It helps them come out of their rooms which is better for their well-being. Even some of the nurses have come in on their day off, and we’re definitely getting Farmer Darryl back next year.”
Farmer Darryl also offers the only heard of deer’s available for Christmas events in Victoria.
