Broadford Primary School (BPS) is supporting the end of violence against women and girls with funding from the Mitchell Shire Council (MSC) to create respectful art.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign began on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) and will conclude today, on Human Rights Day (December 10).
Statistics show that the MSC electorate has reported 1.7 times more the rate of family violence incidents than the state’s average, with the figure having increased by 21.5 per cent since its last reporting period (2023–2024).
MSC has assisted BPS to create a large-scale geometrical mural, pictured in the title, which will be later attached to the school’s entrance with funding from the Free from Violence Local Government Grant Program 2022-2025.
BPS staff are also facilitating student activities which promote respect, including an out-of-uniform day, a whole school breakfast, and encouraging students to engage in respectful conversations.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader Kathryn Saunders said education is the key to the campaign’s success.
“[It’s] a statistic we all have the power to change through education, and through our curriculum,” she said.
“We are creating playful scenarios where the children could practice thinking respectfully, being inclusive, and most importantly showing kindness to all.”
