Member for Kalkallo Ros Spence made a visit to the Positive Wellness Recovery Centre (PWRC) in Kalkallo last month, to hear about the programs the centre offered the community.
Mental health nurse and Member of the Order of Australia Francis Acquah opened the centre last year, to provide the community with a dedicated space for mental health services, disability support, and recovery therapy.
Mr Acquah showed Ms Spence around the centre, highlighting the progress the centre has been making with its programs and its physical transformations since its opening.
Ms Spence said the visit was exceptional, emphasising the invaluable support the centre provided to the community.
“It was terrific to visit the Positive Wellness Recovery Centre in Kalkallo to hear about the programs that are making a difference to the lives of locals and to hear about their vision for the future of the centre,” she said.
“Providing mental health, disability, and wellness programs through such a range of approaches is an exciting initiative and I look forward to seeing it continue to develop.”
Mr Acquah said it was incredible to have politicians visit the centre.
“It’s actually marvellous, I usually say [to have] the politician in the flesh, to have the politicians actually come in, and actually visually see what we are doing,” he said.
The PWRC is known for its approachable nature, and provides a diverse range of services focused on mental health.
Mr Acquah said the centre was growing on a daily basis with its services.
“I walk in here every day, and we’re doing something different. We have … social worker students doing placement, and this is the second group since we’ve moved here in Kalkallo,” he said.
“Every day, there is something new that we are [able] to make happen … it’s about communication as well and having more people coming to see what we are doing and having that open door policy.
“People with mental health struggles can knock on the door … participate in some activity, and as we move forward, we will be doing things such as drumming and dancing, we have our drug and alcohol program, taking people from isolated, lonely places to a place where they can engage.”
The PWRC is located at 3–9 Cameron Street, Kalkallo.
