The National Trust of Australia Victoria (NTAV) is delighted to announce nominations for the 2024 Victorian Tree of the Year are open.

They are the state’s foremost advocate for tree preservation, and since 1982, more than 20,000 trees in 1200 locations across the state have been classified and registered on the National Trust of Australia’s (NTA) Register of Significant Trees.

NTAV Interim Chief Executive Philip Martins is calling on Victorians to get involved and nominate their favourite tree.

“Join the Trust in celebrating the remarkable trees that grace our beautiful state of Victoria – it could have a dramatic history, or a majestic canopy. It doesn’t have to be the biggest or the oldest of its kind, just the tree we love the most,” he said.

Nominations should include details about the tree and why it deserves the title of 2024 Victorian Tree of the Year. To be eligible, the tree must be on the register.

Local trees in the area already on the register include the Purple-Leaved Dutch Elm located between Queen and Watson Street in Wallan, Macnab’s Cypress at Walter J Smith Reserve in Riddells Creek, Monterey Pine at Dromkeen in Riddells Creek, Jeffrey Pine at Lancefield Park in Lancefield, Valonia Oak at Glenaroua Homestead on Pyalong Road in Broadford, Chilgoza Pine at 1740 Donnybrook Road in Whittlesea, and River Red Gum at Red Gum Park on Wood Hill Place in Mill Park.

“If your favourite tree misses out this year or is not yet registered on the NTA’s Register of Significant Trees, there will always be an opportunity for consideration in the future,” Mr Martins said.

Nominations are open online until July 28 at www.nationaltrust.org.au/treeoftheyear.

The National Trust’s Significant Tree Expert Committee will review all the nominations and curate a shortlist of nine exceptional trees, with voting to open online on Monday, October 1 until Tuesday, October 29.
