Kilmore racing participants and trainers can now get busy with a new state-of-the-art barn at Kilmore Racecourse – a project Kilmore Racing Club has been trying to get off the ground for a long time.

Located at the southern end of Kilmore Trackside, the modern facilities include a veterinary area, wash bays, an indoor parade ring for the Kilmore Pony Club, as well as a dedicated area for trainers with additional weather protection, particularly during race meetings in the chilly months between April and September.

The return of racing at Kilmore Racing Club was officially celebrated on July 4, alongside many contributors of the new barn, including Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines, Kilmore Racing Club, Racing Victoria, and Harness Racing Victoria.

Mr Carbines unveiled the completed project, with the support of the State Government’s more than $2.2 million from its Victoria Racing Industry Fund to help the project.

Mr Carbines said the facilities would provide extra care to users of racing in Kilmore.

“These new facilities will provide extra protection for trainers and racehorses, particularly during race meetings in winter,” he said.

“We’re proud to invest in these upgrades which are incredibly valuable for regional racing, the dozens of trainers, and the 140 horses based at Kilmore.”

Kilmore Racing Club contributed more than $1.6 million, with Racing Victoria and Harness Racing Victoria providing $400,000 and $200,000 respectively – bringing the total value of the project to more than $4.4 million.

The construction took around seven months, halting races at Kilmore until the new barn was completed, but now the horse stalls are ready for use with harness racing returned – though gallops action are not scheduled back at the track until October.

Kilmore Racing Club Chief Executive Ben Murphy said the barn was a response to the need of the participants.

“Majority of our season is through the late autumn, winter, – the colder months – and it was about Kilmore giving back to the participants in the industry, with a pretty important piece of horse infrastructure,” he said.

“The first thing that people will notice when they do come in is simply the size of the barn and the size of the breezeways … we sort of tried to not think only of the horse, but also the people bringing the horse.

“We’re incredibly grateful, and appreciative of the support of the local trainers who weren’t able to access the site for the better part of four months, and we appreciate their patience.

“We’re really grateful for the support of the Allan State Government. The project wouldn’t have got off the ground without the support of the State Government … as well as Country Racing Victoria, and Harness Racing Victoria.”
