WHILE Romsey’s cricketers are still celebrating the club’s first top-grade premiership in 40 years, the club was largely overlooked at the Gisborne and District Cricket Association awards handed out earlier this month.
Redbacks skipper Ben Way was the sole Romsey player picked in the team of the year after recording 525 runs at an average of 58.33.
Way also finished third in the McIntyre Cup competition’s Sullivan Medal count with 12 votes, eight behind winner Jarryd Vernon of Gisborne.
Wallan batsman Kieran Atkin was one vote behind Way after a stellar season of his own, compiling 457 at an average of 65.29.
Atkin and team-mate Bryan Vance were Wallan’s two representatives in the team of the year, with Vance acknowledged for his 514 at 73.43.
In the women’s league, Lancefield Black’s Brooke Jeffery missed out on player of the year honours, finishing second, 12 votes behind winner Kim Bessell of Darley.
Jeffrey was selected in the women’s team of the year, as were fellow Lancefield players Nat Jeffrey, 218 runs at 43.6 and six wickets at 27; Carolyn Cusack, 220 runs at 36.67; and Bethany Reece, 200 runs at 66.67 and eight wickets at 20.13.
Kilmore woman Taylah Logie was rewarded for a strong season during which she compiled 148 runs at 74.00 with selection in the team.

While Romsey players missed out on individual awards, the club picked up the Kookaburra Spirit of Cricket award.
In lower grades, Kilmore’s Brent Proctor took out the division one bowling award with 20 wickets at an average of 9.95 and Wallan’s James Farrell picked up the club grade north bowling award with 22 wickets at 9.77.
