HARRY Rowston and Cooper Harvey are the toast of the Assumption College Kilmore community after being selected in last week’s AFL national draft.

Rowston, an Assumption boarder from New South Wales, was taken at pick 16 in the first round by the GWS Giants, while Cooper, the son of AFL legend Brent Harvey, was taken as a father-son pick by North Melbourne in the fourth round with pick 56.

Assumption College First XVIII coach Barry Prendergast congratulated the pair on their selection, and said he was sure they would impress at their new clubs.

He labelled Rowston one of the stories of the draft after he rose from relative obscurity at the start of the year.

“Harry is a very good story because he probably wasn’t a strong draft contender when the year began but all of a sudden he has gone in the first round and been the best player for the Allies during the national championships,” Prendergast said.

“Harry was basically a key forward for us because we didn’t have a lot of height and he could really mark the footy, but he developed so heavily through the midfield during the year that he ended up playing through the midfield in our finals.”

Prendergast said Harvey also played a key role for the team as a part of its leadership group.

“Cooper had an elbow injury throughout the year, so he couldn’t play for a couple of months but was able to come back and play pretty well in our grand final and then finish off the year really well,” he said.

“He played a game later in the year with Vic Metro and kicked a significant goal in that game.

“They were both very significant players for us at Assumption.”

Prendergast said Rowston and Harvey joined Western Bulldogs AFLW player Heidi Woodley as the first three players drafted to Australia’s highest football leagues under Assumption’s high-performance AFL program.

He said there was still hard work ahead for Rowston and Harvey but was confident they could succeed at AFL level.

“There is plenty of work ahead for them, but obviously Cooper has a great mentor in his father who will help him through,” he said.

“They’ve just got to put their heads down now. They’ve got the same opportunities that everybody else has got, but they both have some unique talents on their side so I’m very confident that they will both make a good fist of it and we’ll see them both playing AFL footy.

“As well as good players, they’ve both been culturally good for the team and they’ve been role models for the footy community at the school. I think they’ve both really developed in that area, which is part of what we do here.”
