KILMORE’S quest for back-to-back Northern Football Netball League division three finals appearances fell short on the weekend, losing to Watsonia at Binnak Park by 17 points.
The Blues are not out of the running, but considering the youth across the team, it has been a terrific effort to get to within one game of a potential finals berth.
Kilmore was in the game early, but trailed at the first change, with Watsonia leading 20-14 at the first change.
It was all Kilmore in the second term, with two goals from Jared Crosbie and a goal from Darcy Baldwin-Potton allowing the Blues to take a 12-point lead into the main break, daring to dream leading 35-23.
However, Watsonia took charge in the third quarter, kicking six goals to the Blues’ two to take command. William O’Dwyer-Richards and Chris Barton kept the Blues in it as the two teams turned for home with Watsonia in charge, 61-50.
An incredible last quarter saw both teams go stride for stride, and indeed, O’Dwyer-Richards had a memorable quarter, kicking four goals to take his tally to five for the day, but it was Watsonia who proved too strong, kicking six goals to five in the final term to eventually finish up winning 15.9 (99) to 12.10 (82).
Barton, Toby McCarthy, O’Dwyer-Richards, Crosbie, Cooper Thompson and Liam Monaghan were all named in the best.
The Blues finish their season this week against Mernda, hoping to end the season on a positive note.
