Whittlesea make it six straight

DESPITE getting a fight from Laurimar, the Whittlesea senior women’s team got the job done at home on Sunday to record a 46-point win in division three of the Northern Football Netball League’s women’s competition.

In a top versus bottom fixture, the Power showed they were up for the fight in the first two quarters with the ever-reliable Sarah Campbell and Tara Dyer doing some of their best work.

They were handily aided by Lize-Carina Jankowitz who put on significant pressure around the ground and surged the ball forward on numerous occasions.

Unfortunately for Laurimar, its efforts were not reflected on the scoreboard and Whittlesea’s engine room got on the move late in the second quarter.

An inspirational tackle in the middle of the ground from Tayla Wood led to a nice conversion from Audrey Steinke which pushed the Eagles’ lead to 17 and it was extended with a toe-poke from the goal square from Bernadette Azzopardi a minute later.

Whittlesea’s defensive system held firm in the second half to hold the Power scoreless for the game, eventually running out 46-0 winners.

Azzopardi added a second early in the last quarter to confirm her best goalkicking effort for the year.

Kaila Vangeli, Olivia Hodgson and Steinke were at the top of Whittlesea’s best players on the day, while Campbell was best afield for Laurimar.

Laurimar will host Thomastown and have an opportunity to push for its first win of the year, while Whittlesea will head to AH Capp Reserve to take on 10th-place Darebin.
