CLOSE to $3000 has been raised by the Wallan Circle of Friendship for a good cause.
The group hosted ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’, which is an initiative created by the Cancer Council to help local groups raise money for the fight against cancer.
The Wallan group celebrated its 26th year of hosting the morning tea and it was its best one yet.
More than 60 guests attended this year compared to 120 last year, but regardless of the smaller number, in result, it still had its largest year of donations from both a financial perspective, and a local community perspective.
Wallan Circle of Friendship coordinator Lorraine Alcock told the Review that they were blessed with a heap of hampers from the community.
“Many attendees walked away with wonderful prizes, generously donated by local businesses,” she said.
They sold raffle tickets to the guests for only $2 a ticket and the funds went directly to the Cancer Council.
They also had an entry fee of $10 a head and nearly everyone involved brought a plate to share among the group which meant everyone could eat and enjoy something different.
The group raised $2600 from the morning tea and continues to run other activities to add to that amount.
The Wallan Circle of Friendship members meet every Monday in a room at the Wallan Neighbourhood House.
“The group would love to see more people join, especially younger ladies,” Mrs Alcock said.
Every Monday the group welcomes anyone to join in on a range of activities from bingo to country western days which continue to go towards the Cancer Council.
“We do a range of activities varying on the day and have multiple guest speakers come in and do a presentation for the group,” Mrs Alcock said.
She said she is organising a local fire brigade member to come in and talk to the group on what to do in dangerous situations if they were ever affected by fires.
