NINE goals from Dion Hill and bags of three for four other players helped Wallan to a resounding 95-point win over Gisborne Giants at the weekend.
Proving themselves as the competition’s favourites with a stirring victory against Diggers Rest last week, the Magpies showed no mercy on Saturday to the Riddell District Football Netball League’s newest side.
They burst out of the gate accurately with 10 goals straight at quarter-time and added the first two of the second term in no time to jump out to a 72-8 lead.
The Giants finally swung back with three of the next four majors, but the visiting black and white army could not be contained.
They stretched the margin to 67 at the main break and had already crossed the ton when they headed inside for a rest and recharge.
There was no switching off in the second half though, as Wallan produced another 10 goals to notch up their biggest score for the season.
The final score 174-79 was not only a reflection of the class that the ladder leaders have, but also their ruthlessness to put away teams even after the win is secured.
Hill’s nine-goal performance saw him deservedly named as best afield, while Lachlan Smart, Sean Morris, Hayden Gill and Nash King all popped in three in a powerful all-around display.
Steven Boyall was the only non-goalkicker named in the best, with Chris Stewart also being named with two goals of his own.
The reserves also remained undefeated with a 116-1 win over the hapless Giants, while a thriller in the under-19.5s ended in a one-point win for Wallan.
That win extended the under-19.5s’ winning streak to five, meaning that the Magpies hold a collective 17-0 record across the three football grades.
Their A-grade netballers couldn’t continue their own unbeaten start, going down narrowly to the Giants 54-50.
The Magpies held a one-goal lead heading into the final period but couldn’t contain Gisborne who is proving to be a force in the premier netball competition.
Wallan’s B-grade side couldn’t be topped however to make it six in a row, and the 19-and-under girls added another win to their season, beating their opponents by 11 goals.
Meanwhile, Romsey can’t seem to put it together in the same way it did last year in the senior footy, going down to Kyneton by 28 despite pushing the Tigers all the way.
The home side were three goals ahead in rapid time before Jack Jedwab kicked a steadier for the Redbacks midway through the quarter.
A 15-point deficit at quarter-time was erased in eight minutes of action thanks to Ash Millane’s first of the game and seconds to Jedwab and Sam Wilson.
The visitors were down by four heading into the second half and hung in to keep it to an eight-point margin with 15 minutes to play.
But four of the last five goals for Kyneton put the game to bed and relegated Romsey to its third straight loss.
Corey Pertzel was best-on for the Redbacks. He was joined by youngsters Wilson and Matthew Milburn in the best while Jedwab’s four goals landed him there as well.
It remains a long season for the Redbacks’ reserves team who went down to Kyneton by 134 points in their matchup.
The under-19.5s couldn’t capitalise on a bright start, eventually beaten 90-39 by an impressive Tigers team.
The story was much the same in the netball matchups with Kyneton recording a 13-goal win over Romsey in the A-grade matchup. It means the Redbacks remain winless for the season.
Success came in the B-grade game for Romsey, who won its sixth consecutive game in the second division 65-43.
C-grade moved to 3-3 following a 20-goal win over the struggling Tigers, while the 19-and-under team recorded back-to-back victories, winning 57-29.
Lancefield return from its week off this Saturday to host a rejuvenated Melton South team in the senior men’s football who just knocked off Macedon by three points in a boilover.
Wallan will head to Tony Clarke Reserve to try to take advantage of the Cats who will be a bit stunned from last week’s performance, while Romsey will head to Arnolds Creek Reserve to take on Melton Centrals.
