THE 2025 Mitchell Shire Youth Council was sworn in at last Monday’s council meeting, with a combination of returning members also complemented by new members who have stood up and made their voice counted.

The ceremony was attended by family and friends, with Mayor Councillor John Dougall and senior councillors also leading the swearing in process.

Eleven members have been elected for 2025-26, with eight returning members and three first-termers.

North Ward Councillor Nic Houghton was elected youth mayor as part of the swearing in ceremony on Monday night, with fellow North Ward Councillor Evie Burks appointed as deputy youth mayor.

South Ward Councillor Jess Stevens was appointed as secretary, while North Ward councillor Cena Marshall was appointed as the senior youth councillor.

Fellow members of the youth council saw the North Ward also elect Jacob Hard, the Central Ward appointed Bailey White, Elena Skala, Jeremy Stute, Phoebie McDonald and Elaina Harrison, and the South Ward appointed River Challis.

All 11 youth councillors will be taking on various portfolios as part of their commitment, while they will also have a say on key issues surrounding the Mitchell Shire Council for further consideration.

Cr Dougall said it was an exciting time to join the Youth Council.

“We’re excited to have you here with us and have a few new faces. Our Shire is growing, it’s a dynamic Shire, we have a huge opportunity to cater for future generations with the population growth which will be experienced across Melbourne’s north, and in many ways, you will inherit the outcomes of decisions that are made here,” he said.

“For younger people to have an active interest in what that future may entail is very powerful.

“You’ll be a distinct and unique voice that adds to the mix of information, understanding and helps to navigate that dynamic scenario that faces us here in Mitchell.

“I would like to see a situation where you come in, you get a taste for it, and after about three months, you explain to us what your observations are.”
