The North Central Review is an independently owned newspaper publishing company based in Kilmore that is responsible for publishing two community newspapers each week, covering communities within the Mitchell Shire

Wallan Gamblers Anonymous (WGA) is now back in operation, offering a safe space for community members to openly share their experiences with gambling.

Founder Jason Beale is putting the word back into the community, encouraging locals to reach out for help, particularly in regions where individuals may be less likely to seek assistance.

Mr Beale founded WGA after attending his first Gamblers Anonymous (GA) group in Melbourne, which he said offered him the support he needed to overcome 15 years of addiction and turn his life around.

He has now been free from gambling for over 1000 days, marking a powerful milestone in his recovery, and wants to help others on their journeys.

“Obviously had felt there was no way out, but my mental health and everything was the lowest it’s ever been, and I honestly didn’t think I was going to change,” he said.

“I wanted to, but that’s the thing when you’re that far in addiction, you can’t do it on your own.

“We know that gambling is a massive problem, it’s one of the biggest addictions out there, and probably not one that’s talked about a lot.”

In regional areas, where communities are often close-knit, Mr Beale highlighted the stigma individuals face when seeking help, particularly when paired with the fear of being recognised.

But at WGA, where anonymity is core, individuals can find a safe and supportive space to share their experiences without fear of judgment.

The sense of community and support extends beyond meetings, as members can regularly reach out to one another, before and after sessions, creating a strong network of encouragement and understanding.

“It’s pretty much: who you see there, what you hear, just got to let it stay there,” Mr Beale said.

“We go through a book … we do some readings together as a group, and then we answer questions that might go half an hour … we share our experiences and obviously our past and what’s going on now with our lives. It’s not always just based around gambling.

“There’s a lot of discussion around what’s going on day to day, what’s causing them to gamble, so the group discussion and the shared therapies is quite a big one, because obviously you hear that you’re not alone and other people are struggling. It’s quite powerful.

“We all get each other’s number, and we have that contact—messages, calls— if someone’s struggling.

“That’s basically how we can help them.”

WGA meetings are held every Monday from 7.30pm–9pm at Wallan Neighbourhood House.
