This year has been Whittlesea’s best season for quite a while, with nine straight wins on the board after round nine.
The Eagles now sit on top of the MC Labour Division 2 competition after defeating Northcote Park last week by an impressive 59 points.
The Eagles have been in front by a solid margin for most of the season with their lowest winning margin in round four against Thomastown, when the side recorded a three point win.
Possibly the highlight of the season was the top of the table clash three weeks back when the Eagles faced off against the then other undefeated side, Diamond Creek.
On that Saturday, Eagles fans were treated to a grand final preview when the unbeaten sides met at the showgrounds. The packed venue saw Whittlesea power to a 15 point win over Diamond Creek.
It was clear from the early stages of the game that the record crowd would see the home team grind its way to a victory to keep the Eagles unbeaten start intact.
Looking forward, the biggest challenges for the Eagles will be in round 11 when they meet St Mary’s. When the two sides met in round two, the Eagles came home with a 13 point win. This time, Whittlesea will have the home ground advantage.
Later in the season there will be two consecutive rounds that will test the Eagles’ mettle. First, round 16 will see South Morang again in the spotlight. At the last meeting, the Eagles came home seven point victors.
Then, round 17 will see the present ladder leaders and Diamond Creek face off just two weeks before the finals commence.
The Creekers recorded their second loss the week after going down to Whittlesea when South Morang came home strongly in a 66 to 57 point victory. Money at the moment is on a Whittlesea V South Morang grand final.
Laurimar’s challenging season
Meanwhile, Laurimar has had a challenging season. The team presently sits second bottom on the ladder with only one win to their name.
The side was unlucky with its one point loss to St Mary’s back in round 8.
Laurimar had a disappointing start to the season in its opening round against Whittlesea, with a 15.18 (108) to 5.10 (40) result.
Laurimar meets Whittlesea next week in what is sure to be an interesting round, this time with Laurimar having the home ground advantage.
Mernda on a winner
Mernda is presently sitting fourth on the ladder in the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 3 competition with six wins on the board and a healthy 152.4 percentage.
Last week’s one point win over the Fitzroy Stars certainly gave Mernda fans a mid season to remember.
Over the season, Mernda has returned some impressive results with a 115 to 69 point win against Heidelberg West, 103 points over Reservoir, and a 117 to 45 point thrashing of Epping.
Round 10 will see Mernda meet Lalor at the Waterview Reserve, followed by a challenging meeting with the Old Paradians in an away game.
The second half of the season looks positive for Mernda, and the season finisher in round 18 against Ivanhoe should provide a spectacular end to the home and away season.
