The North Central Review is an independently owned newspaper publishing company based in Kilmore that is responsible for publishing two community newspapers each week, covering communities within the Mitchell Shire

The popular Natural Treasures in Mitchell Shire brochure has been updated and the new edition is launching this month, listing more than 30 local parks and reserves for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The launch of the updated brochure, plus a new digital resource, is happening on Sunday 19 May at a community morning tea at Tallarook Cricket Club. This is located next to the Boulton Flora Reserve, which is one of the Natural Treasures featured in the new updated brochure.

Led by local ecologist and volunteer Dr Peter Mitchell, the updated guides include detailed maps and information about nature reserves that are open and available for everyone to explore.

“The landscapes of Mitchell Shire have many Natural Treasures including small but rich patches of wildflowers, tree-lined corridors along roadsides, railways and creeks, larger conservation reserves and state forests, and private bushlands,” Dr Mitchell said.

“This guide showcases the many wonderful places in our shire where we can enjoy nature and appreciate the amazing wildlife, wildflowers, and ecosystems right in our backyards.”

The free community launch event on May 19 will welcome community members to learn about local wildlife and show them how to find these reserves, access walking maps, and dig into the natural history that make these natural treasures such rich places.

The launch will include a talk by Dr Doug Robinson, Chief Conservation Scientists with Trust for Nature Victoria, as well as kids’ activities, and a chance to connect with a range of local environmental community groups and land managers.

There’ll also be a short guided nature walk in Boulton Flora Reserve, led by local botanist David Laurie.

The updated brochure and digital guide has been developed by the Mitchell Environment Group (BEAM) with Wallan Environment Group and Mitchell Shire Council, and supported by Wettenhall Environment Trust.
