WeKare Disability Support Services, WDSS, hosted an open day for its activity centre in Kilmore last month which will be used to support the wider community.
The disability support group opened the activity centre in Kilmore last month as an extension to WeKare services, providing weekly social activities for people with disabilities and those who need the support in the community.
WDSS marketing and events coordinator Melissa Keep said the activities would help people with disabilities to step out and about.
“Basically it’s a couple of days a week we have arts and crafts, and we’ll have bingo and different things for our participants to come and participate in,” she said.
“From here, then we can go and do group activities … just different bits and pieces, also cooking classes and things for participants.”
In addition to the activity centre, it also includes an op shop – with nothing over five dollars – for the wider community to come in and donate which will go towards the activities.
WDSS director Noble Wekare said the activity centre was not limited to people who use the services.
“We will try to accommodate everyone who walks in because we also have the small op shop where they can get stuff … food, clothes and all that,” he said.
“The idea is that whatever we get from the op shop side of things will go into the activities which will then enable us to get everyone to come and join in the activities, even those who are not [National Disability Insure Scheme], NDIS, participants.
“[The open day], it’s just been really good to see everyone from different offices around this year.
“It’s pretty good to have everyone coming in and also some of the participants coming in to just have a look and see what they will be expecting moving forward.”
The activity centre is located at 23A Lumsden Street, Kilmore.
