Whittlesea Secondary College opens a new building

WHITTLESEA Secondary College students will have access to new learning opportunities following the official opening of the school’s upgraded Build and Technology Centre.

The new facility was unveiled at an opening ceremony on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the college’s broader upgrade and modernisation project.

The centre features contemporary learning spaces and technology, including 3D printers, designed to help students develop practical skills, creativity and an interest in growing technologies.

Principal Kathy Mourkakos said the upgrades would provide new opportunities for both students and teachers.

“We have modern learning spaces that are equipped with technology such as 3D printers, fantastic new fitness centers that promote wellbeing and health for our students and an active lifestyle. We see beautiful landscaping and outdoor seating areas that provide spaces for collection, collaboration and community,” she said.

“When you look around I hope you see the opportunity that we envisioned when we were pushing for the updates and upgrades to happen. It’s an opportunity for students to discover their new passions, opportunities for teachers to deliver innovative learning experiences and an opportunity for our community to continue growing and thriving together.”

The wider project has also included renovations to the existing science building, the conversion of the car park between the two buildings into a courtyard, a new fitness centre near the oval, a covered outdoor locker bay and landscaping improvements.

Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage attended the opening and acknowledged the efforts of the college in securing the funding and bringing the project to life.

Ms Kathage praised Ms Mourkakos for her advocacy, describing her as a leader for both the school and the wider community.

She also highlighted the importance of providing students with opportunities to develop hands-on skills and creativity.

“As there is a lot of talk about AI and what the future of our society looks like, I’m happy that there are young people that are going to be in here using their hands, using their creativity,” she said.

Ms Mourkakos thanked everyone that was invested for their contributions.

“Today we celebrate more than a building, we celebrate the future of Whittlesea Secondary College and the opportunities that these exceptional facilities will create for generations of our students to come,” she said.
