THE State Government have launched a Veteran Card – Victoria, marking an Australian-first initiative separate to existing concessions that recognises the service and sacrifices made by current and former Australian Defence Force members.
The State Government will invest more than $36 million over four years in the digital card already taken up by more than 6000 veterans.
Minister for Veterans Natalie Suleyman said the Veterans Card had received the largest single investment by any State Government towards veteran initiatives.
“It is one of the many ways we’re honouring the veteran community,” she said.
“We’re incredibly proud to provide Australian Defence Force members in Victoria with essential support and benefits.
“Nothing can repay the debt of service, but the Veterans Card is our way of saying thank you.”The Veterans Card provides eligible veterans with $100 off one light vehicle registration; free trailer and caravan registration; a marine licence; free public transport on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day; a fishing licence exemption; and access to State Government veteran-specific employment programs.
Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said the government wanted to provide ongoing veteran support.
“A veteran’s contribution doesn’t end when they leave the defence force. We want to support them through the next stage of their life and easing the cost of living is one way we can help,” she said.
“Veterans have given so much for Victoria and Australia and they deserve our ongoing recognition, appreciation and support.”
Anyone currently living in Victoria who has served or is currently serving in the ADF is eligible for the Veterans Card – Victoria.
All eligible members of the veteran community can apply through either the Service Victoria website or the Service Victoria app on their smartphones..
