BROADFORD’S senior footballers were dealt a tough loss to Warburton-Millgrove in round one of the Outer East Football Netball division two competition, but the club’s A Grade netballers stated their premiership aspirations with a win against the reigning champions.

The Roos’ senior football side had plenty to celebrate as it returned to a standalone team after combining with Yea last season due to lack of player numbers.

But while the crowd at Harley Hammond Reserve celebrated the return of the Roos, the Burras were out to spoil the party.

Warburton-Millgrove dominated large patches of the contest en route to a 16.11 (107) to 3.5 (23) victory.

Competition for the ball was tough when Broadford met Warburton Millgrove on Saturday.

Broadford coach Jayden Welch said skill errors and inconsistency plagued his team for much of the day, but that a strong patch in the third quarter showed what the Roos were capable of.

“We started quite well in the first quarter … [but] by about halfway through the quarter we got a bit sucked in and started doing undisciplined stuff, which led to a lot of 25-metre penalties that led to goals for them,” he said.

“In the second quarter I think we were a bit lazy at times. We were playing their game where we should have been playing ours and we let them get away with it for too long.

“In the third quarter we came out and started playing our brand of footy – putting our heads over the ball and being a bit more physical. I’m pretty sure they didn’t score a point in that quarter.”

It was a mixed day of sun and rain in Broadford’s season opener against Warburton Millgrove.

Welch said his side needed to bridge the gap between its worst and best.

“We proved to ourselves and the spectators that when we play our best brand of footy and stick to our structures, we’re a really good side and we can open teams up – it’s just that we only do it for 10 minutes at a time and then go away from it,” he said.

“When we weren’t playing our footy, we got hurt.”

Warburton-Millgrove full forward Will Farrer dominated the match with five goals, but Welch said Broadford defender Josh Delaney did well to curb Farrer’s influence after being switched onto him in the second half.

“Obviously [Warburton-Millgrove is] a very good side. They’re very strong up forward and the ball was coming in without much pressure up the field, so some of their entries to Farrar no one would have been able to stop,” Welch said.

“The midfield pressure needed to pick up a little bit, so it’s one of those things we’ll work on and look to improve.”

Netball

The results were much better on the netball court, where Broadford’s A Grade team avenged last year’s grand final loss to the Burras.

Down by two goals at quarter time, one goal at half time and three goals at the final change, the Roos rallied with a 13-7 blitz in the final term to seal a memorable victory.

Captain Ally Black led the charge for Broadford in the centre, with new recruit Chloe Meulenmeesters teaming well with Kate Berger in goals.

Broadford faces another test against Yarra Glen in a road game this weekend.
